Hey 1bradford, this happened to my 98' xlt. You seem to have a failing Throttle Position Sensor. I live on a hill and this happened to me every day on my way home, I took the car to my local Ford dealer and they tuned up TPS, runnin' like new now. Look into that, and tell us what you find out.

Does it feel like someone is hitting the floorboard right under your seat?

i have recently changed transmision in 98 explorer and have a whining sound when idling and also thumping under heavy acceleration i have re-torqued the premitant band in the trans and hasn't changed i have also changed my throttle position sensor and air flow meter, and no change, this explorer has done 270,000 km and is very ratly in the top of motor but goes away after 20 mins or 20 km ? would thicker oil do any justice,
i have a spare car for parts same model no g/box

so today i have reset the computer in order to turn off engine light and found after 100km it is back on this is the orange light does this have anything to do with the thumping?

I had the same thing this past summer while on a road trip. Mine was spark plug misfire. Later traced it to a sliced spark plug wire. The "thumping" meant "backfire" for me.

How is your truck idling?

It wouldn't hurt to have a look at the motor mounts.

idles a little rough

I would be willing to bet it's the transfer case.

Would u-joints really cause it? I have a '96 4WD, and mine does the same thing.

idles a little rough

Mine idled more than a "little rough". It was apparent it was missing by listening to the idle. You probably have a different issue than mine.
