ticking noise

Hi I own a 99explorer sport and there is a ticking noise under my hood like a watch can any one tell me what it could be

A few more questions...

What engine do you have? OHV or SOHC? Is the ticking constant or does it increase with engine speed? When was the oil last changed and with what grade oil? And where on the engine do you notice the sound the most?

I have a tick on my explorer its a 93 its the lifters on mine and if you use certain oil it will quiet down some... i have also heard of the dipstick poking down too far and getting hit causing a ticking noise

My engine is a sohc and the ticking noise is heard towaeds my winshield if tht helps any ani hear it all the time

I have the same issue, a constant ticking up near the windshield but mines a 91. Mine increases with speed, I'm assuming lifters.

What do you use for oil to get it to quiet down, cause it gets annoying on longer drives.
