Your XLT has a 8.1-in. Differential, the Timberline have an 8.8-in rear differential, they both however use the same 3.58 final drive ratio I believe. It would be more work and money to make the 8.8-in Timberline diff bolt up to your XLT. Plus, they are expensive and hard to find.

Thanks for the reply. There's one available on eBay right now that I was considering if it was fairly simple to swap. Has anyone else found alternatives? I love that feature on the Timberline.

It really doesn’t make a difference, and it wouldn’t be simple to swap on your car. What makes it appeal to you?

First, let me start by saying I appreciate your opinion. I'm not a seasoned "off-road" guy and thanks to the information you gave me earlier, I now understand it's not an "simple" swap. I bought this explorer as a family car but I would like to make it capable of having a bit more fun than oem. If I'm not mistaken, a limited slip differential, while not a locker would provide better traction than a open dif. When you said it won't make a difference did you mean that both wheels engaging vs one wheel engaging isn't "a difference"? I'm fully aware this gen of explorers are not the best for off roading and Im not expecting Raptor capabilities by swapping a diferential. However, I am hoping to increase its off road capabilities for any family outing (camping, fishing, etc). Thanks again, I appreciate the help.

It may help, but won’t make any difference for what the Explorer can do.
