So, as im sure you all know, our beloved Explorers arent exactly reliable and we like to break parts on them ;)

But the time has come for me to replace mine for a more reliable, half ton truck that has more power and can tow more.

So my choices are:
70-80s era K10 or K20 4x4
late 90s Dodge 1500 or 2500 diesel
1999-2002 Chevy 1500 Z71

So what do you guys think? Should i get rid of the ole girl or try and get a half ton? I was going to get a 78 K10 but the guy backed out. Im kinda leaning towards selling it and "buying" my dads truck from him (2002 z71) so he can get a new motorcycle.

Also if anybody in the Oklahoma area wants to buy it, hit me up!:feedback:

I'm confused. I thought you wanted something more reliable than an Explorer. Why would you want a Z71? You've got a v8 2wd Explorer. the only thing on that list that beats it in terms of reliability is that Cummins, if you can put up with the fold-able frame. One of my first vehicles was a 77 k10... that thing didn't get better than 12 mpg with the engine off being towed on a flatbed, and those pre-90s 350s are only good for about 70k miles before they need a complete rebuild.

whats more reliable than a ford 5.0!??

If you must replace the Ex with a non-ford from your list, the only real option there IMHO is the dodge deisel, but be prepared to put some money into the trans if you buy an automatic. The 46RE and 47RE were not very reliable unless they were maintained meticulously, and very few were. There are a ton of aftermarket upgrades for them though, and they can be made to be bullet proof. I built one back in college that held so well the customer broke the input shaft while testing the stall speed (it had a lot of upgrades though).

Thanks for the replies guys

I just love the look of those old body style Chevys, and i dont really care about MPG(im sure i will down the road) and i didnt know about them lasting so little.

My dad have a 67 Fastback Mustang when he was in highschool and he said all it did was eat starters and it was never reliable, exactly like mine. Ive been through 2 starters and 3 different sets of battery terminals, they just keep breaking. And with it having almost 200,000 miles im not sure how much farther the 5.0 will go, and i want to do burnouts and go mudding without worrying about the motor throwing a rod or something. I love Explorers, but i just cant stay in the Ford family unless i find one that has lower miles and the guy will trade

Yea I would probably have to vote on the Dodge Diesel. That way you can put some SAAWEEETT stacks on it and tune it to breath black smoke lol
