Hello, My name is Brent and I just joined this site. I have very extensive knowledge on building and racing 5.0 mustangs but I have zero knowledge on my 4 liter. I have 7 years experience on the mustang scene and I know how some parts can work great and some can just suck. Can you guys give me some good starter info so I dont waste money on bad parts? I recently bought a 91 4 door 4 liter automatic explorer. BONE STOCK.

1. Flowmaster catback, very good priced, notice improvements and how does it sound? Not like rice burner right?

2. Kurtz (sp?) power stack induction, good price, worth installing?

3. What else is worth it? Pullies, electric fan, chip?

I have been reading your posts and would love to hear some input. Most of the mods above make a nice small difference on the stangs, but chips on stangs suck since you can just bump up the timing. Is the hype true for the explorers? Anybody ever take theres to the track?

THANKS A MILLION!

OK, 20 people has viewed this, anybody actually done any of these mods? How did you like them.

Thanks!

From what I hear the chip is very good for the Explorers and right now they are on sale for the members of this site (check out the main page).

There are a lot of improvements for air intake, exhaust etc. but why don't you just put in one of those 5.0 you're familiar with? ( http://www.kaufmannproducts.com/kpi.html )

Ill give you my view:

Get headers and a cat back system, a super chip and if you want a K&N filter in the stock air box or on a tube. In my opinion these 4 mods will give you the most for what you spend. The TBs MAS and others may be worth the investment if you do some internals but I would spend(and did spend )my money on these four first.

I dont know of any pulleys for the 4.0, the electric fans have been tried by a few on the site and they had poor experiences with them- a search for the thread will enlighten.

I have the Borla Headers and cat back so dont know about the Flow master- others on the site seem to like it. My Borla system is nice and Ive had it on the truck for over 5 years- not cheap but it is worth the dollars in terms of perf. and longevity. A bit louder than stock, and has a grumble not a whine like some of the import mini cars I hear running around. It is still a v-6 though so dont expect it to sound like your stangs.

I have the headers , cat back and K&N and they were all worth the dollars for me. I am finishing up a rebuild on my engine now and will get a chip (Super Chip) after Im done so I cant speak to it- but if I didnt have to rebuild, the chip would have been the next engine mod.

What are you trying to do? Street, track, Offroad, towing? . After the 4 mods above I would think about gears for the next dollars spent.

FWIW

Oops, somehow I lost my message during typing, anyways...

Filter, chip, and exhaust sound like the best bang for the buck as of now. Thanks for the info and replying to my post.
I have no big plans for much off road, I just like the explorer because of all the room and the winters here in Indiana. The only think I dont like about it is the ugly 15" rims on it but I cant decide what rims I really like.

Yep, a 5.0 conversion sounds great and the more I look at it , it seems pretty easy. I have an S trim sitting on shelf that would work wonders under the hood of the explorer:) I am getting ready to buy a house though and a few other things so the 4.0 has to do for now. I would really like a 5.0 explorer though and then I would be right at home.

Any more suggestions people? I am ordering the exhaust and KKM Monday, but I want to be sure I REALLY want the chip before I order it and I also have to decide which one. From reading old posts, people seem to love the superchip brand and have little problems.

thanks!
