time to upgrade?

Got a 93 explorer engine and trans are weak. What options do I have for engin
e/tranny swaps? Truck has to be ca smog legal.. I'm thinking newer 4.0 or 5.0? Any suggestions?

If u have to deal with cal's smog i wouldnt change the motor. just freshen it up

That's what I'm afraid of. Need more power to make the hill to the on the way to the dez. Can't seem to do anything in cali....

as long as the engine is newer than a 93 and it will pass ca smog its ok. take it to a referee when its done.

Any engine newer than what you got man. Find an Ex with the 5.0 or even just a strong 4.0. How many miles on your truck? It didn't have a ton of power to begin with...

I agree KPSquared.

Go with a 5.0L. They were smog certified for use in the intermediate SUV. It is not a 'bolt in' install though. There are some mods to perform first. There are a number of ways complete the install. Check out some of the threads that cover the full install of the 5.0L.
