I have a 2003 Lincoln Aviator, 121K. I have owned it for a year, which I've put on 14K this past year. It's sole purpose is to get our stuff from NH to GA and back for 3 months in the winter. I keep it well maintained.

I have owned Mercury Grand Marquis' and Crown Vics which were bullet proof. This is my first SUV. I read quite a bit about timing chain failure. I have no symptoms and it is nice and quiet.

My question: should I do preventative maintenance and do a timing chain job or should I wait for symptons.

thanks

Tom C.

From what I can see it looks like the Aviators only came with the 4.6 V8. You shouldn't have to worry about timing chains. Otherwise I wouldn't replace timing chains without a reason to such as having the timing cover off.

The 4.6 engines usually give you plenty of notice when the issue occurs. Unlike the 4.0's which tend to fail suddenly without warning and ruin the engine.

The 4.6 can also be done with the engine in the car. If I was buying a used replacement engine, I would absolutely do the timing components as pre installation maintenance.
However, in you case, just wait until you get the start-up rattle noise.

Mine went to 150k before the tensioners leaked.
