timing chain warranty

I just got my explorer with 95k miles and In the back of the manual is a sticker that says the tensioners are warrantied until 100k miles. When I start it up cold, it revs to over 2k rpm's sometimes and I hear the rattle. Thats the only time I hear it rattle. What should I do?

ummm, call the stealership and see what they say!

and the cold start rpm surge could possibly be the intake gaskets. that seems to be the most common fix. there are a few ways to tell if they are leaking though before you go tearing things apart..

that would work. just make sure you are only letting the propane flow from the torch and not ignite the propane. just go around the upper/lower intake with it while the engine is running and see if there is any kind of surge. if it surges, you found a leak and should change the gaskets.

My intake gaskets where faulty and I had the same issue.

Due to the gaskets shrinking and cracking across all 6 intake ports it is very hard to diagnose using propane or spraying carby cleaner. I had no luck with the carby cleaner method. I just replaced my faulty from factory gaskets and problem solved.

If my memory serves, warranty coverage on the tensioners was extended to cover 7 years/100,000 miles. Yours will be well outside that time frame...

i had the timing chain issue bought a used motor did the engine swap now i cant get the new motor to fire the starter engages and turns the motor freely fuel is getting to the intake. can anyone help. 2002 explorer 4.0 sohc, thanks

No offense to you afcpd, but start another thread with your problem, You might get an answer, what you did is kind of thread jacking

Would the soap and water spray work for this too, to find if its leaking? I also heard carb cleaner

Yea I forgot about the 7 year part, I guess i'm out. What can happen if I don't fix this/buy the kit? Mine doesn't rattle that bad, only at startup

It is true that the engine can keep running for some time or die at any time. A lot of people have gone many miles with this issue.
My friend says he bought his '98 XLT with the rattle 8yrs ago and put over 100k klm's on it since, as well as driving it across Australia. He has 288k klm's on his. I also purchased and drove mine with the rattle. Both of our rattles are/where due to a broken front left cassette. Mine had 160k klm's on it but my crank to jackshaft tensioner went after a further 10k klm's. I was very lucky to avoid engine damage.

The rattle is most likely to occur from a broken front left cassette and less often the rear right cassette.

Here is the Be Warned part:
If either cassette is broken it will continue to break into pieces. These pieces will work their way down inside your engine, amongst the moving parts and end up in the sump. Larger pieces can catch in the chain and snap the chain or cause it to jump a tooth or more. This is very bad and usually results in bent valves. The smaller pieces can be sucked into the oil pickup tube and block it causing oil starvation to critical components. This is also very bad.

I agree with Joe. Fix it. There will be plenty of life left in the Engine. (unless it's been thrashed)

So the rattle is caused by a part that has already broken or is wearing out? That doesn't sound good to me. Mine is really only noticeable on startup and when going up a ramp or something with a load at around 2800 rpm.
