Tin Roof Rain noise.

I recently spoke to one of powertrain engineers at a Ford Event and specifically asked about adding a cold air intake. He said exactly that, waste of money. In order to see any noticeable improvement he advised CAI would need to be part of a package which would also have new PCM programming, and new exhaust.

The Interceptor Utility Police Program engineers tried these improvements when asked to get more power for the Police Utility. The end result was the 3.7L V6 Mustang engine is now the Police Utility base engine. 300HP, only 10HP more then the retail Ex but much better lower end torque for "take off acceleration".

I drove it at the end of March and its quite a different drive then our Ex's. Its quite a compliment to the engineers because they have been able to make the Utility handle and perform almost like a Taurus SHO.
I wouldn't go that far for peforming.... they really need to stick the turbo 3.5 in the Explorer, the Flex has it, so why not? It fits. I would buy one hands down if they offered the Ecoboost (and not the lil 4 banger coming out).

If the 11' had the ecoboost 6, it would be about the perfect suv for the price.

Cory, I called Ford customer service 1-800-392-FORD and was given a case number. I haven't heard anything back. What is my next step? Is the "steel drum" roof noise an issue Ford is officially recognizing or fixing?

striker310,

I’m not a technician so I’m not familiar with the most up to date repairs, but please send me a private message with your case number, and I can help by researching the available details so far and find out what the next step would be. Please let me know if this is something you would like to do.

Cory

Heard it for the first time today.. has to be raining pretty good and damn.. it is loud.. such a hollow metal sound.

Ok I have contact by Ford on my roof noise they are very sorry but they need more input from other owners to make sure that they have a problem with all the others so contact the Ford svc. rep on here and lets get this thing fixed if enough of us raise the roof hahahaha we will get a fix from ford.

Had a great drive into work today it was raining so my roof sounded like a tin drum being beat on and my A pillar was rattling like a bee was stuck in it. I am so glad JD Power sent me that survey the other day to get my opinion on my 45K 2011 Ford Explorer Limited.:thumbdwn:

Ford when is some noticeable action going be taken to get these issues resolved as they are not prevelant in just a few vehicles but plaguing all of us.

Since we can't foam it, I wonder if stuffing a pillow's worth of cotton in there will help. :D

...might as well wear headphones! LOL

Hopefully Ford will figure out a way to get a tool to get some foam in there...maybe a spray of some sort.

The rain noise is horrible if you do not have a moon roof. I find it hard to believe that ford did not notice this in their R&D while testing this vehicle. I too feel they should do something about this!

Thank you for the suggestion NomadTom.

blwnsmoke & cbx1047,

Just in case my other post was buried before, I would like to offer my help with this concern. So I can do this, please send me a private message with your VIN, approximate mileage, and dealer name.

janskim,

I received your message and sent a reply back as well. Please check your inbox.

Sitting in the driveway during a heavy rain sounds like you in a tin shed. The rain when driving seems normal but sure makes the phone calls thru bluetooth hard to hear and be heard.

Cory sent info back to you.

I think this rain issue info needs to get passed up the line to Ford Engineering to start thinking about it. I don't think the dealers will have a solution or be willing to start messing with expirementing on what will or will not work.
This is going to be a tough one based on the photo of the area: a hollow cavity with limited access to get a sound deadening coating into. For the tech guys on here whats that rustproofing goop they inject into body panels made of.

Thanks for the reply Cory, I bought my Explorer from Jack Griffin Ford in Waukesha Wisconsin. Vin # is 1FMHK8F8XBGA24448. Thanks

Thank you for the recommendations to contact me everyone!

russell bruesch, janskim, & cbx1047,

Cory,

I also have an issue with the rain noise:mad:. Sound like hail hitting the roof. With the microphone installed above the driver, makes using the audio system impossible. Cannot use for telephone calls, voice commands, etc.

X is as quite as my Lincoln Town Car :) until it rains and the X fails the quite test:thumbdwn:.

Have talked to my salesman about the issue with no response from him.

Is there a fix yet?

Bruce :us:

Cory forwarded my info to CS, CS called me the next day and called my dealer. Dealer said "could not duplicate" because it wasn't raining out. CS then closed my case.

Basically, I see this issue as a complete waste of time to try and get Ford to correct. A simple hose or car wash will not do it. It has to be decent size rain drops hitting the roof straight down. You'll also have to schedule an appt on the day it rains.

CS stated that if I can get the dealer to reproduce it, then they can forward to an engineer. FORD, how about you forward to an engineer NOW to take a look at it at the plant!! If you don't have the equipment to easily reproduce this noise, no one will.

Frustrated and rediculous!!

Is the noise loud enough for you guys to capture with smartphone videos? Maybe if we post some up, they can get a better idea of what it's like. It worked for the A-pillar noise.
