As for the rain noise, I think the truck is pretty quiet. I can barely hear the water hitting the truck when I go through the car wash. Others have noted what you have said too.

yes, Heavy rain fall on my ex ( with no moon roof) is incredibly loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heavy rain is usually pretty loud regardless.

You gotta remember that it has a long cabin, so you've got a lot of water hitting the roof over your head. I've found it to be no louder than any other vehicle I've driven in the rain..

I think the rain sounds really loud when you're parked and the rain is coming straight down on it. I only notice it when I'm parked in my driveway. Once I'm driving it seems much quieter.

The rain on the roof sound in one with out moonroof seems a lot louder and I traded in a 06 xplr that did not sound like that I have owned explorers since they first came out and this is the FIRST one that has made this sound. It seems to me that they skimped on the roof insulation

Had my first day driving in the rain yesterday and for the most part itr was quiet. Every now and again there was a really loud noice like rain hitting a tin roof but it was rare, I was thinking it was when I went under tree's or poles and maybe it was larger drops, but I can confirm it is freaking loud when it does happen, it gave me a fright the first time lol.

My last Explorer had rain noise too, whenever it rained. You wouldn't believe the noise it made when it hailed.:D

noisy roof when raining.

I cant believe the noise the roof of my explorer limited makes when it is raining hard. Gentle to moderate rain no issue but large raindrops sound like you are sitting in a shed with a metal roof overhead. A very loud mettalic sound drums the roof that is very annoying to listen too.
Anyone else notice this ??

Well i thought all cars had metal roofs except convertables, I must be stupid or something i guess. And i guess all the previous explorers ive owned and driven that did not have rain noise from the roof must have been made out of some composite material that absorbed the noise. It sure looked like metal but i guess i was wrong.

Thanks for pointing out to me that it is perfectly normal for my new explorer to sound like it is in a hail storm every time it rains hard.

No moon roof, and the noise is right over the driver and passenger seating. It really sounds like the space between the outside and inside roof is hollow with no sound insulation. I have had several explorers and have never heard anything like this. It is only the large raindrops that fall off the trees or power lines that seem to cause the loud metallic drum sound. I am sure if you have a moonroof you would not have a problem.

Don't forget this Explore is MUCH larger than the old Explorers, so it also has a much bigger roof. And yours is all metal. The new Explorer is about 6 inches wider and 4 inches longer. Plus, Ford wanted to reduce weight. Possibly they did cut down on some sound deadening materials in the roof.

Had this yesterday with the large rain storm, loud tin can sounds then the a pillar started farting with the cross winds. Should make an app from Explorer sounds to embarrass other trucks with...

What does this have to do with the sound of the rain on the roof? My EX does the same thing.. It's really loud, whereas my old 2006 never had this kind of rain on the metal roof sound.

I have to chime in on this, as the last time this topic came up I was waiting for my X and was chuckling over the comments being made.

Since then, I've got my X, and the few times I've driven while raining, I understand what people are saying. There is a definite "tin" sound of raindrops hitting some part of the roof that I've never had before with other cars. I have an Odyssey, which has a very large roof, so the comment that the roof is bigger is silly.

Now, a few things...I've been driving with a Thule 1600 cargo box since right after I took delivery, so most of my roof is NOT being hit by the rain. The tin sound I hear also comes from right at the front of the roof, and I thought it was only because that's about all that shows with the cargo box on top. Based on what a few others have said here, I wonder if they have built the very front of the roof (the portion that angles down to meet the windshield) out of something different than the rest of the roof. That would make sense given the sound only comes from the front of the roof (for me) and also this is something new...no other vehicle I've ever had makes this "tin" sound with rain drops hitting the roof. I'm not complaining, it's not horrible, but it does exist.

Hey everyone found out what part is causing the tin can sound. Its the first 6" of the front roof the sloped part. Tap it with your finger and you'll hear it. Further back on the flat its more solid. Why that front part is made of thinner metal is beyond me. Can't wait till a rock hits and dents that piece of the roof.

Guess its time to move to the desert southwest where they never get any rain !!! Hopefully ford will correct these issues on the 2012-2013 models.
