OMG! I was laughing at everyone and thinking, "really, you're complaining about rain hitting the roof!?" Then it happened, was in a rain storm and found myself loooking up a few times just to make sure it was still rain and not golf ball sized hail hitting my Ex! :)

Oh. My. You definitely have to hear it to understand it. It sounded like huge balls of hail hitting my car and it was only large drops of rain. They seriously forgot to put in sound deadening material.

Anyone have a theory on why this area is so thin gauge metal. Sound insulation weight I doubt was a concern, could it be a crumple zone? Def something in the design my guess.

I would love to see an answer from Ford on this. As others noted, I laughed when I first read the comments, but after taking delievery I now know what people are talking about (and it was a light rain)...

Hmmm..I had my Explorer out in a heavy rainstorm over the weekend (wipers on high, can't go more than 40 mph to see) and I really didn't notice any more noise than I get in our Focus or in my old F-150.

Maybe different states have different raindrop sizes???:dunno:

:p:

Tap that angled part of the roof with your finger and you'll see what we're talking about.

I know what you're talking about, but I've never heard what I would call excessive rain noise on my roof, and I've had it in plenty of hard rain (been a REALLY rainy couple of months here).

I have pulled the maplights out of the roof to install my Homelink, and if I recall correctly, there wasn't anything there except the headliner.

I had a similar issue on my 1996 Mercury Sable. My 2011 Ex Ltd does not have this issue. I was in a huge downpour today, loudest noise was rain on the windshield. I do have the Moon Roof. Those experiencing the noise, do you have the moon roof?

Take the headliner down, and coat with that lizard skin stuff. Or would that void the Ford warranty? I don't know.

I love almost everything about my new Explorer. The "almost" is because my wife and I drove it in the rain yesterday. We just stared at each other in amazement that this wonderful new car would have such a glaring design oversight...it sounded like sitting under an aluminum TV dinner plate!!! I've owned many cars and SUV's and I've never heard anything like this. Ford needs to fix this now. It makes the quality feel of the vehicle seem very cheap very quickly.

To answer the question on moonroof or not. Mine has the moonroof.

Ford did we forget something in the design build step?

+1 for noise
(LTD, w/Moonroof)

I have had a K&N is all my cars for the past 20 years. No issues to report.

Do not over-oil after a filter cleaning and you will be fine.

Rain noise appears to be coming from rain hitting the very front part of the roof (where it slopes down to meet the windshield). They must be using a different material, or did not insulate it the same as the rest of the roof. It is not coming from the entire roof from what I can tell.

sm4astan is correct. The noise comes from the first 6'' where the roof slopes just above the windshield. If you tap it with your finger you can here a definite "PING" sound. I have driven mine in some heavy rain and didn't think the noise was over the top. It is definitely louder than any other vehicle I've owned. I am going into the dealer next week, I am going to approach them on this matter. See if they can provide some sound deadening in the cavity. As it has been stated here before. These are some of the problems that we are going to encounter with a new build. Frustrating at times, but anything I have approached my dealer on has been sorted out, so far.

Keep us posted on what they do about the tinny roof. Curious if they will owe up to doing something under warranty.

I highly doubt they'll do anything about roof noise. It's not safety or performance related, and it's not a drastic issue like paint peeling off, so nothing will probably happen.

I don't think they will do anything either. Ford would have to come out with a TSB or service bulletin. Doubt it. I'll ask the bodyshop what they would do, see how much a fix would cost and then post it up here. Cheers.....
