Tin Roof Rain noise.

Glad I got the moonroof. Had plenty of rain here, and only once did I notice any real noise to be (possibly) bothered by. Since at that point I was paying attention to driving as the wipers would barely keep up, it really didn't bother me.

I haven't driven in the rain a lot, but when the rain is heavy or has large drops like under a tree, it is really a cheap tinny sound. It sounds like something you would expect in a cheap pick-up with no headliner. I like my EX, but ford really missed it on this one.

Hey guys I'm trying 14 mil clear film over the area outside. Will post results once I install and test. Hoping the film might absorb the energy and reduce the resonance, everyone say a prayer as if this works it would be a cheap and easy fix.

I have hail damage :( on the roof of my new 2011 X. Talking to the Paint-less dent repair man and he suggest that when he removes the head liner we will see what we can put on the ceiling to quiet down the noise. Have seen several suggestions and possible areas of the problem areas.

If somebody has fixed the issue, where did you put the noise proofing material and what type did you use?

The Paint-less dent repair man has fixed several hail damaged 2011 X for a local dealer and he is very knowledgeable on how to take the panels off and what is behind them for sound proofing.

Also want to thank Kappaknight  for the great photo of the ceiling with the head liner removed. Would like to see what the underside of the head liner looks like.

blwnsmoke, thank you for letting me know the message didn’t go through properly.

I just wanted everyone to know that I'm still looking into this. For all of you who haven’t done so already, I would like to help in every way I can with the issue. So I can assist and escalate your concern, please send me a PM with your VIN, dealer name, and approximate mileage.

Cory

Has anybody got a response from their dealer about a fix for the rain noise issue?

Holy crap. Just tap on the section above the front windshield with your finger and you'll see why the noise is so deafening in the rain. What a horrible design!!! This is pure crap from Ford. What where they thinking??

Every day I find another reason to be disappointed by this car. I'm not happy. Nearly $50K and this is what I get?

Lame. Pure lame.

If anybody does come up with a solution for this, please start a new thread.

I know there was chatter of some fix attempts buried in here, so it would be nice to see if they work.

This is really disappointing.

I can't believe all of the trouble with this vehicle. So much anticipation. So much hype. The waiting, and waiting. And then... the big letdown. I want my old Lincoln Aviator back until they refine this thing more.

I feel like a big Beta tester that has been suckered out of a lot of money.

Man, I wish I didn't leave in the land of no-rain, or I'd get a video of this fail sound, mix it to a beat with some Jamaican music in the background and a nice rasta beat and put it on youtube and tweet it out - the funnier it is, the more views and the bigger the embarrassment and the bigger the chance that we'll force Furd to make a fix.

Furd : any Ford product that is a turd.

I guess that means that I have a 2003 Ford Mustang, a 2010 Ford Fusion, and a 2011 Furd Explorer. I'd change my sig, but like Ford I'll just be apathetic and hope the problem magically solves itself :D

I finally drove through some rain last night, not much, it only rained for 2 minutes or so, but sound was a disgrace. The Explorer is so refined and quiet and then to have it sound like a tin garden shed as soon is it starts raining. I paid almost $50K for this vehicle, I hope Ford is working on a TSB for this problem and puts it out there soon.

FYI: I do have the panoramic moon roof.

I have had my ford explorer for one month now and it has rained for 28 days since, I haven't heard the noise you people are talking about, but tomorrow they are announcing one more day of heavy rain..... will go try it on the highway and see if I can hear something. Still feels like I'm driving a lazy-boy.......I will report tomorrow.
I have driven through my share of rain as well and can't say that I've noticed any more noise than in the Highlanders I've had. It isn't a problem for me. I went through this thread quickly and it seems that the Canadian owners, for the most part, report that they don't have an issue with noise.

Maybe the Canadians have their Rush albums cranked up so they don't hear it as well...?

:D

Think this will be cleared up for the 2012 models? I would think its an easy fix and they still have plenty of time.

Maybe they'll switch from the current recycled condom wrapper foil to full soda cans when sourcing material for the piece above the windshield.
:D

I'm Canadian and haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary in rain yet after three months of ownership. I have the moon roof. (And I don't own any Rush albums!)

Cory, it's EVERY Explorer that does this, not just a select few. All of them have no insulation in the roof and can be very noisy in the rain.

I went out and checked mine. If I tap on the rear metal roof behind the moonroof I get a well dampened thud, but if I tap on the angled sheet metal that rises from the windshield it is more like a snare drum.

Exactly!!!

Cory, this is why I was upset that CS closed my case because the dealer can't duplicate it.. because it wasn't raining. Ford engineers should be able to duplicate it easily.. I sure hope the engineers have been told about this and they are working on a fix rather then us owners getting smoke blown up our butts.

The whole.. "go to a dealer and have them look at it" does no good. FORD should be looking at this NOW!!
