I just picked up a 1996 Ford Explorer Sport. I do not like the tint on the rear, left and right windows, along with the rear window. How would i go about removing that tint. The tint has a mirror look to it. I hope its not factory tint. I want all my windows to match.

-Is is factory?

-And can i get rid of it?

Thanks -Jeff

Mike

Thank you mike. I will do my homework!

Not a problem... thats what im here for =)

To help ease your search a bit:

You probably have a factory tint embedded in the glass. You can help it a little by adding the right tint film and combo of films to the other windows.

Mike

Where could i find some info on this subject?

I think i would be better off getting new windows wouldn't I? Maybe in a salvage yard? I just really don't like the look. I am playing on getting black rock crawlers and i want the tint to match cause its a white explorer. Thanks -Jeff

Much cheaper and easier to add film tint. Plus you wont have to worry about leaks from mucking with the seals.

I don't think you'll ever find explorer windows that aren't tinted...besides think of it this way you can hide stuff in the back without someone seeing all you got!

I wish I could afford to tint my fronts to match my backs it's funny to hear everyone's preferences.

actually nick, some of the xl and xls models didnt come with tints. there are a few around here and there. not common, but def did happen. ive even seen expeditions that are the base base model wtih no tints. someone did post however that a walmart tint was very close to the color of the rear gold factory tint color.

Alec, do you think if i mixed films ( i would have it done professionaly) i could get the desired look (black)? Because i have the "metallic" tint on the windows now. But i don't think the factory tinted them on the inside. Thanks

By mixing films my side windows matched pretty well.

on my 96, putting black tint film over the goldish factory tint, just make it look more gold. i put limo all around and the front two was black while the back were gold. id just get it professionally matched.

I didn't even bother putting tints in the back b/c I think it's fine the way it is so I went to Wally World and got some tint there and they match almost perfectly. Here's a pic:

Dead Link Removed

This pic was taken back in March when I was doing a complete detailing. That way after claying the truck and before doing the Klasse treatment.

Do you by chance remember what tint you got at wally world??? What number and stuff???

I had absolutely no tint on my explorer, none, then I (a shop) put 5% on the back, and 20% on front. Looks alot better now, I dont like the reflective tint either.
