The back tint is inside the glass, thats why you can't get it off. Run a search for this, there were some old threads that addressed this very issue. I think the consensus was that if you tint over the factory tint then you'd get a very mirror like appearance.

I think it was 96Eddiebauer or something that matched his factory mirror tint. I think he said it was some kind of bronze tint that he found at walmart. It matched perfect.

I just had 5% thrown over the factory stuff. Looks great.

But your 2000 already had the smoked glass. Scotty has that reflective tint so it will look weird if he tinted all his windows the same way. The front 2 wont match.

I had my 2 front windows tinted with 20% and that matched the factory tint perfect.

Scotty, the tint applied in the back windows are done permanently at the factory so you cannot remove it. However, I've heard many people have done 5% limo tint that made it looked either even more mirror like or just plain black. I looked everywhere and couldn't find a tinter that has the tint for my truck until I found this thread posted a while ago on this board saying that the tint sold at Wal-Mart may work so I tried it and it worked!! It's 99% perfect and here's a pic to proof it.

Dead Link Removed

I applied the tint to the front windows only. Since we have tint laws here in NC. I think Wal-Mart sells 20% or something but just remember, don't get the limo black tint. Get the one that has the light silver tint. There should be a little sample at the top of the box so check closely. Good luck and show some pics when you're done.

do you know the number on the box?? like the "model" number and how many rolls did you use for the front two
???

by the way..... you have a pretty damn nice yard.

Mine are matched.

Got them done at Alta Mere. double layer of 15% on the front two, and one layer of 15% on the back 5. The front is a shade lighter than the rear but still looks great.
For the front it was a bronze metallic tint.

that's alot of tint.. how much did that set you back?

I think it was like the 7200 series or something. The picture was taken over the summer so the yard is nicer than what it looks like now.

What was the first year of the "Bronze" windows in X's anyways?

I think the first year of the Privacy Glass was '92 and ended in late '97 MY.

so the 7200 series would do it, i didn't think they had they 7200 series, i thought they only had the 7500 series but how many rolls of the 7200 did you use???

I'm sorry...It's the 7500 series like what LStoudamire said on his other post. I used 2 rolls because I goofed on one window. One roll is enough to cover two windows.

Or you could get all of the windows warrantied, and not have to do it yourself. Sure the price is what matters, but in the long run you'll wish you had a warranty.

As for when they started the bronze tint? The explorers came factory "bronze mirror" in '95 and continued through '97. After '97 they put in factory "smoke" which is not so hard to match.

'96Eddie...Don't get me wrong man yours looks good. In fact i didn't know there was such a nice "do it yourself tint" out there. However what are you going to do if it starts to bubble or fade?

I have always done my own windows, and have never had it bubble. I have recently redone my tint in the rear because of fading, but the first go around lasted 5 yrs. I tinted my side windows with the WalMart tint in Feb of this year, and haven't had any fading yet. We'll see how long it takes.

I really don't mind it bubbles and fades. Actually, there're these little itty bubbles on the edges but it's soooooo hard to notice. But anyways...if it bubbles or fades, I'll just peel it off and apply some new ones. If I can't find a replacement in the future, I'll just ditch the whole idea of retinting. It's not really a big deal for me.
