Tire Rack Concerns

Yea Yea Yea! Pulling the wool over their eyes rules! I'm not crooked individual, but I don't need anyone to save me from myself! :chug:

OH! And, TireRack DOES require you to specify a vehicle make, model, and year when ordering from their website, too. They just have such good prices and service I can't help but do business there.

TIRERACK4EVA! HAHA :p

Thanks for the info. I didn't know you had to specify the make/vehicle if ordering over the Web. I'd have an easier time lying from a drop down menu, than speaking to someone on the phone. Tirerack does have excellent prices. I ordered a set of 17" Fitipaldis about 2 1/2 yrs ago for my '98 X at the time (way b4 all the Firestone crap). They were real cool. I'm, about ready to replace the tires, and I'm worried that I'll have a hard time getting someone to mount them.

I have been researching some different places for some time now and TireRack is the cheapest, but I went elsewhere to look up the brands that they do not carry such as Toyo and found TireNet.com to be pretty close in price. Their prices are e-mailed to you after filling out an online form. They wrote back very friendly with my quotes and had no problem with the fact that I have a 94 explorer! Those who do not want to lie to get Tirerack to cooperate (they may have been singled out in one of the lawsuits) do have alternatives! Rob

Guess what...

IT"S NOT JUST TIRE RACK!!!

I went to Discount Tire, the other big mail order place. They have a shop near my place. I bought my 17" wheels and my Pirelli Scorp Zeros from them. Now they tell me that they cannot sell me replacement tires. They will only sell 235/75 15" tires for the X. That means the two biggest mail order tire shops won't sell us tires.

So I got into a small argument with the guy, and sai that I bought these tires and wheels from them. He said hold on and went to talk to his manager. Finally he says that if I bring them the wheels, not the X, but just the wheels, they will mount the tires. Then I would have to take the wheels back and put them back on. I brought up the point that the wheels were on the X and if I took them off I wouldn't be able to drive it here. He just shrugged...

I also just rememebered that I bought the warranty on the tires to cover them against any road hazzards or problems. I'm going back tomorrow to see what they say about that. If they won't sell me tires, will they still replace one them if damaged according to the contract. I'm pissed and ready to raise some hell if I need to. If they say it's not valid anymore or that I have to bring the wheels in I'm going to demand a refund. They also say I have a lifetime balance and free tire repairs. I wonder if they will still do all those? I'll keep you updated.

Sounds like a fair argument to me, Doc! Yea, Yea, Yea, drop the hammer and give 'em hell! :hammer: :D

agh... that sucks that a consumer cant get them..... but i am lucky :) i can order them through work at dealer cost without getting hounded....

Firestone screwed FORD when they cried that it was the X that was at fault and not their tires. That was the biggest load of crap. The tires were bad, there's nothing wrong with the truck.
Now it seems that tire rack bought this story, hook, line, and sinker.
As usual its the consumer, guy's like you and I, who have to put up with the bull.
What the hell do they care if I want to put different size tires and/or wheels on my truck. I can't stand these a**hole PC types.

DocVijay..

Get the name of the manager that said NOT to bring in y our x.. And Make sure he knows you are going to call the corporate office.. As of about 2 months or so ago when I had to go though this I talked to "Mark", a VP, at Discount Tire corporate and asked him what was the official corporate policy for installing Tires...

He said as long as it fits it isn't a problem.. If the suspension has been modified to fit the other tires.. then the other tires are ok to install.

Once you get the manager name and store number.. call 1-888-774-6560. and tell them you want to know the corporate policy on installing tires on Ford Explorers.. You will most likely have to have a call back.. and they will ask you what happened.. Be nice about it.. That phone number is "consumer affairs" at Discount Tire.. I told the guy I wanted to verify what the policy was before I posted their policy on a board with over 10,000 members...

Great info, Mark. I'm sure everyone will appreciate your experience here! Being cool and collective and having all the facts together is definitely more productive than raising a big hoopla and pissing people off.....even if you do feel they are in the wrong. I just like that icon! :hammer: :p

Back when I was getting bigger tires before my lift, I asked the guy who handled my tire sale about that and he said the same thing. As long as it looks like it can handle it, put 'em on or something to that effect.. That was about a year ago though

OK, here's what happened today. I went back and asked them about the lifetime balancing and free tire repairs, as well as the "extended warranty" I bought for hte tires. He said that they would still do all that as I bought the tires before the "policy change." He did however say that they can't mount new tires on my X. Maybe I will call the number Mark gave. I don't have the managers name, but I have the names of the two employees that gave me the info. Once again, I'll keep everyone updated.

Hello all i am a new member and found your forum by a search..I went to my dealer today and was told i need 4 new tires.(this was the reason it pulls to the right)They wanted to sell me Goodyears at $380 or so..My friend told me to get allterian a little bit wider and with a bit more meat. After looking at tirerack they dont have a great selection..I don't do much off roading..What i am concerned about is rain and snow..I travel many regular roads and do the highway as well..I do hit a few dirt roads here and there..Can anyone point me to info on a good tire for my truck? I understand that this is for Explores, However i have the Mountaineer which i was told is the same thing..Any help would be apprediated..
