31x1050 on a 15"rim. What's the best you can do?

I'm sure that filling them with nitrogen or helium might make them a little lighter. I remember reading one time that nitrogen won't leak as fast as regular air, and helium could leak faster than regular air. Are you familiar with any of this? I'm sure that either gas might throw off the accuracy of a TPMS system.

Actually, Brooke, I am familiar, but only by chance. I used to work for Mercedes and the mechanics all had their own nitrogen tanks for that very purpose. But when I asked about it, they said it was more or less for the temperature change and maintaining tire compression than anything else(the nitrogen molecules are smaller than the whole mixture of air molecules). I thought they used it for making the tires lighter and thus making better gas mileage, and Im sure it does make them lighter with better gas mileage, but the mechanics told me no. Maybe it was because my job title was "Porter" and considered "lower on the food chain" than them so they wanted to make it seem like they knew more than me or something, I dunno.

Hey Mike. Glad to see this thread as I an probably a day or two from ordering tires from TR. I need to replace the two back tires on the Explorer I just bought and really am looking to get a budget-price tire as I'm still in school and not sitting on a lot of money.

Its an Eddie Bauer, so I believe the tires are 255/70-16. I'm considering getting the Avon Rangers located here (http://tinyurl.com/dg6gmf), but if there are some significantly better tires for not that much more money, or if you know if anything is coming on sale very soon, that info would be much appreciated. I guess I just need a basic all season tire and I don't imagine it would need to be a terribly high speed rating or be anything special. Thanks for the info.

I have a set on our blazer.. It has probably a good 2500-3000 miles on it, compared to the BFG long trails, these tires are far superior and more responsive on the road not to mention quiet.

Oh awesome. Glad to hear someone have some experience with them. I actually just took my Ex in for inspection and guess what, it needs rear tires to pass ;)

I'll be ordering them today. Might try to get in touch with Mike or wait for a response before I do, but if someone like's em, I'm sure I'll be happy with em.

You may wanna check on the availibility on them too.. When we ordered a set it took almost 2 weeks to get them from the local distro.

Yeah, the Avons were in stock. There were some Continentals that were a little more for a "better" tire, but the Avons got better reviews and were a lot cheaper for the two. I wanted to get them and get them.

Also, can someone verify that my tire pressure is SUPPOSED to be 30 psi? On the driver side door sticker at the bottom, it says "at ____ kPas/ 30 PSI cold"... or something like that, but it definitely says 30. Does that mean that I should definitely have 30 PSI in my tires, or can the tires make a difference too.

The reason I ask is because my tire pressure gauge says theyre up around 38-40 and on the "bad" tires, the inside tread is worn down to almost nothing while the outside of the tire still has plenty of tread. Should I depressurize my tires down to 30 or 32? Is there any harm in doing so, or will it help? Thanks for the advice.

Welcome Mike,
cool, i'm looking for a set for a '04 Ex EB - 245-65-17's is whats on there now. Only about 6/32's left on the tread.

I've run Michelins on my heep, over 80k miles, on LTX A/T's, i'd love to buy them but with things going sour in detroit i can't afford the new ones. Anyways I don't like the OEM Rugged Trails real rough and when i put on new OEM shocks about 20k ago, they ride firm. .like a brick. My Ex will be used in heavy snow, rain, dirt, two tracks about 30% and street/highway the rest.

Two questions that you might be able to answer?
I kinda like the reviews on the Firestone Destination AT's, how would they compare (Michelins and BFGoodrich)?

I also noticed that the Firestone Destination AT's 255-65-17 (108s) are about $15 cheaper than the 245's (105s) and only about a half inch difference, 4lbs heavier, greater load, would I have any problems that you might be aware of in going the slightly bigger size? What’s weird is the 235 is also is rated for a 108s but for some reason the weight and load dips when it goes to 245’s and increases in price, then back up with the 255’s, my thought is since the Ex is one of the best sellers out there and the 245’s so popular that it’s actually a cheaper tire and more expensive – bigger profit. . if that make sense.

What could you possibly come up with?
Jim

I think that is the best tire you are going to get for the money on your Eddie Bauer. You don't really need to spend the extra cash to get a better tire, believe me. I was a college student once and I know how it can be with the whole money situation. Those tires will suit you just fine. ;)

I would say it tire pressure should be anywhere from 29-32 PSI. When the weather gets cold, your pressure decreases so if it says 30 cold then I would say have it at 31-32 when it feels ambient outside.

The Firestone Destinations are a comparable tire. I recommend them for your situation. You are probably thinking correctly when you talk about the whole bigger profit deal. You can go slightly bigger but I really wouldn't recommend it unless you have a lift kit in which case you could go alot bigger and be fine. But if it is stock height, in this case, size DOES matter. Stay within your range and you will be fine.

Mike, a coworker of mine is looking for a 215-75-14 for his 1957(?) four door sedan.

All you show online is trailer tires. Do you have other tires in that size available that are not for a trailer?

Thanks!

Im sorry we don't have that. This could be due to the fact that the vehicle is so old, but I am sorry that I couldn't find it for you :(

No apologies necessary. He is having a tough time finding much of anything. I think he has found about 5 tires, but not really excited about any of them...

Turbo Explorer Sport

Hi Mike Paul here I have 315-35-17 on the rear of my Explorer sport now and I am looking for something a little bit more taller than the 26" (25.5")that they are. I am looking for something around 27"-28" tall to fill the rear tire wheel well up but I want to keep the width of the tire because it looks so good under there. Here is a pics of my Turbo Explorer Sport. I also need them to have a z speed rating or better as well because I drive it at 125+ mph. :D
