tire size for 93' Explorer

I've bought a 93' Explorer and i want to give it a chance to go off-road.
Please help me to know which tires size are suitable without suspension or body lift kit .
In the owner manual ford speak about 235/75/15 AT.
Someone says that a 31/10.5/15 may run.
Someone says that 30/9.5/15 is the maximum.

For sure the 30" will work with your existing rims, they are almost the exact same size as the 235's (29.7"). With 31's, it all depends on which rims you have on as the original. Check out the feature Explorers, there are some with stock rims that run 31's and some even 32's (probably with some trimming)

I have a '94 with stock rims and am able to run BFG's All Terain 31x10.5/15's. The only thing you have to worry about is your speedometer won't register the right M.P.H.

Go for the 31s, I have 31" BFG ATs and love them.

I have a 94 XLT. I put 31 X 11.5 on it with no rubbing anywhere. These tires helped tremendously with off road fun. Most tire places will do a trial fit if your concerned about clearence.

Uh, forgot to mention that the tires fit before I lifted the Explorer. I must also mention that you are entering the "Danger Zone". First it's tires, then Manual Hubs, then lift kits, and before you know it
"Let's go to MOAB". You have been warned, offroading is very addicting.

Regarding the question about your speedometer: Lets just do some simple calculations .... I know there are charts, but this is more fun and reflects I was awake in my 7th grade match class.....

We know a mile = 5280' x 12" = 63,360"
We know the distance traveled per revolution = 2 x pi x radius (or some say diam x pi)

On the 29.7" stock tires:
29.7" x 3.1416 = 93.30" of travel per rev.
63,360" per mile / 93.30" = 679 revs per mile.

On the 31" diam tires:
31" x 3.1416 = 97.39" of travel per rev.
63,360" per mile / 93.30" = 650 revs per mile.

Therefore the ratio = 679/650 = 1.0446.
Thus if your speedo says 100, you are actually travelling 104.46mph (100 x 1.0446).

BUT DON'T be frightened: If you do enough burnouts you can get your tire diameter back down to 29.7" and your're ok with the law again.

1. Yes, you change the speedo gears to correct the difference.

2. If you do not change, I thought it might be nice to know that the 235/75/15 are 28.9" not 29.7" so if your speedometer read 100 ( which it can't if it only goes to 85, but you get the idea) you are actually going 107.3 mph.

I was able to squeeze 31's on my 92 without a lift and no rubbing. Each person has his own opinion as to whether or not the tires look too big for the wheelwell. I kind of like the look but I have the build up bug so the 31's will soon be gone and 33's are on there way with a lift kit. It is addicting .

I ran 31x10.5 BFG All Terrains on my 93 for about 3 years before I could afford the lift and tires and wheels and hubs and.... you get the idea.... But the 31" tires fit just fine. and your speedo will not be off enough to justify spending the money for the new speedo gear. it will only be off by 3-4 MPH. (at least mine was) Dead Link Removed I now have 33" tires and the speedo is WAY off. (gotta get to the shop!) Happy Wheelin'!

How can i get in and adjust the speedo? Is that an easy thing to do? or is someting for the pro's. I've got very limited mechanical know-how.
