tire size??

I was wondering what the biggest size tire i can put on my 97 explorer sport would be?? Right now I have 245/75/r16 on it. Can I put 265's on it?? Any advice would help. I also keep hearing that 31x10.5x15r are the biggest size it can handle with no lift. But why does my explorer have 16 inch rims on it?? if so is what i have on it the biggest it can handle with no lift in it?? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT!!!
