I just found out I have a d4 axle code. (3.73 limied slip) I thought I had 4.10's with an open diff. My question is how do the 33's feel with 3.73's? I want to re gear but I found out some mods have to be made to either the gears or a pin to put in 4.56's or higher and I don't want to just go to 4.10's. I have an automatic trans and a cortex 1950 programmer but no other performance mods.

Can't remember if your Trac is 4or 2wd? Either way you can do 4.56's but if you're gonna stay under a 35" tire you're fine with only getting 4.10's. 4.56's will take your RPM's up too much any put more strain on the drivetrain with 33's.

If you upgrade to 4.10 or 4.56's I'd suggest getting a locker and installing it at the time of the regear to save time and money. I only suggest the locker because of the type of wheeling you do.

Ok, I think I will just stay with this gearing and see how it works. I am planning on installing a Powertrax no slip locker within the next month. From what I have read it can be done at home pretty easily. My dad is a Cat mechanic so he is pretty handy with tools. I just have to figure out the exact one I need. There are 4 different ones for the 31 spline 8.8. I have 2wd btw, discovered today that I need a locker.

Lono installed his on his own. When you do the locker swap upto 4.56's you'll need the extra help especially with the locker with the type of offroading you do.

You're not gonna like 3.73's.. it just feels slow and bogged down going up inclines or getting up to speed. 3.73 to 4.10 isn't a big enough jump to make a good difference. 4.56 is a little bit better than 3.73 and stock tires, which is good because it overcomes the extra weight of the tire in addition to the size. I'm going to be upgrading from 3.73 to 4.56.. probably no locker due to what I use the vehicle for but I'm definitely gonna either rebuild or upgrade my rear limited slip.

Man I'm just stuck. I'm set on the locker but the gears are just so expensive to install. 4wheel parts qouted me 800 just for install and that is crazy. I really wanted 4.56's though. This truck is a slug right now and I do all city driving so I actually expect better mileage out of the 4.56's and it will be a little easier on the tranny.

Do the gears and locker yourself, there's tons of write-ups on both. I know there's plenty of other members around you that would probably be more then willing to help out. if you're doing 33's, 4.10's will be good enough.

i had a 2wd with open 4.10's. like rebel said, i installed them myself. with the help from the forum, any idiot like me can do it, so dont bother paying another guy to throw them on for you. youre welcome to PM any time if you do decide to put them in yourself if you need help.

as for the 33"s on 4.10's, i gotta say, i get by ok, but it is a little more sluggish, i want to get some 4.56's if i ever get the money and time. you can get by just fine on 4.10's with 33"s though. as for the lockers, if you do any type of off roading in 2wd, i say lockers are a must. it makes a world of difference and will be the best upgrade you can make to a 2wd hands down. take rebels advice and do the installs yourself, unless you dont have the space or tools to do it. good luck on your plans and hit me up any time if you got a question.

If you guys think its easy enough then we'll give it a shot. My dad has a huge International service truck so tools wont be a problem. I think I will go with 4.56's. I have just read something about shaving one of the gears or a pin for the locker.

you may or may not have to do the dremel shave on the ring gear. it will depend. just read up on all the locker install right ups and it will all make sense to you once you get that pumpkin open.

Hey Rebel, I saw in the other thread about the go pro video that it'd be cheap to get a powertrax no slip for cheap... link? :)

Scope, I was referring to a gas tank skid plate. From the site sponsor, Tousley Ford I think is the name.

I had 32's on my old '05 Trac with 3.73's and it was a dog.

I guess I should be happy that south Georgia is pretty flat. I don't think it's as aesthetically pleasing as the north Georgia mountains or Piedmont region but it does save me gas and I don't hate my gearing.

3.73's with 33" tires :thumbdwn:... my truck is a slug on the highway and my foot starts to cramp up trying to keep it at speed..

I say go 4.56 :biggthump

Yeah, I'm tired of 3.73's... it just sucks, all the fun is gone. =(
