To cam or not to cam? 4.0 OHV

The hole isnt the biggest problem with those.if you look at the cap that has the hole in it,it is pressed in a different depths and makes the side wall and front of the rocker tip very thin and breaks easy.also same note they grind the other side down that rides the valve at different thicknesses and is why they have to put the caps in at different depths, this also changes the ratio of the rocker.ill be selling my set soon!im still trying to make or find a set of roller rockers.

Its done. All back together and running. A few small issues. On first start, it ran like ****. Found I missed plugging in the vaccum line to the pcv valve. What a difference that made. Next, coolant leak. Was coming from the thermostat housing. I was givven the wrong thermostat. I put the old one back in with the new gasket from the gasket kit and it was all better.

Took it for a test drive. Felt pretty good. I stepped on the gas, and ran thru a couple of gears (Shouldn't have, but I didn't do a re-ring or anything) and Started getting a loud ticking from the motor. Not good. Off the gas, and after about 10 seconds the ticking was gone. Not sure what that was about. Time will tell.

I just changed the oil, and finished by installing the fan. I'll know more over the next few days.

The info you guys are showing on the delta rockers is not good. ****.

What heads did you put on or was the heads not replaced?

the heads were replaced.
Odessa Cylinder head

maybe the oil wasnt warmed up and thinner yet? it was still cold/thick? wouldnt lubricate the engine due to thickness at the higher rpm?
a different weight oil should solve that if thats why. wait until its fully warm and try it again.

Where the heads 98tms?

You know, I dont know which ones they are for sure.
The combustion chamber and exhaust ports look exactly the same as the heads I pulled off. That much I do know.
When I had the loud ticking, the motor was warmed right up. Running 5-30 synthetic for oil.
I'll be taking it at highway speeds for about a half hour later. I'll keep the revs around 22-2400 rpm. Hopefully I won't be phoning for a tow.

Ticking probably normal especially with deltas, unless its a spark nock then try 90+ gas

Noise was pretty loud. I cant see it being detonation, as even at idle the motor was ticking away. I sure hope it isnt a lifter that compressed and took a bit to pump up. They were rebuilt lifters that went in. I sure dont want to be having to change one.
This was a big job for me. My body's pretty sore from hanging over the engine bay for about 12 hours. Drank last night and the back pain went away. Today, Im still sore, and Im hung over also. Seemed like a great idea last night.

Hmm give it awile.i wouldnt get on it for a couple miles though.lifter and rockers all need to seat/grove themselves. All that work i would have pulled the motor so you could put a new HV oil pump or atleast a new screen in

Ps hang overs and motor work never works out good!!!.when i was building xeeks i all most forgot some bearings and put the fuel rail on backwards!!hahah;(

nice to know you were drunk, i just thought thats how you always were :p lol
forgot a ring, forgot to remove tape too!

just dont drink tonight, dont want either one of us turning into brandon with a tranny on top of us, only itll be a 200lb axle.

yea, see if it gets any better, everything was dry. give it some miles, if it keeps doing that it could be the weight of the oil.
yea lifters suck, im living with one ticking on me cause i didnt get new ones. i dont wanna change them now either...

After doing all that work, I don't think it would have been much more to pull the motor. Lesson learned.

The good news is that the motor runs. I would never have even attempted anything like this without you guys sharing your knowledge here.

I said hungover and yes i am allways like that!!hahahah no ring was extra and tape was holding the motor together! Hahah;p
O im enjoying a cold one right now!;p
yea pulling the motor would have been was easier.

Well, I havn't floored the petal and ran thru the gears yet, but the motor does seem to be quieting down.
I have about an hour and a half on the motor now. One thing I am noticing is that the idle is a bit shakier than stock. Not an issue, just an observation. I bet the more radical cam creates quite the shake at idle.

oh no. P0305
Missfire on cylinder 5.
I'll get the plug out and have a look at it tonight. I guess that explains the rough idle.

Why do I have a feeling the drivers valve cover has to come off to see what I broke?
As I'm thinking about this (And looking at the pictures you guys posted), I bet that the noise I heard was a delta rocker exploding. I think that a valve not opening could cause a P0305 code.
