I recently Trailered my mustang to a race with my Explorer.
there were only a couple of hills that I could only go 60 kph. For the rest of the time I was barley doing 100kph. What I'm looking for is some quick bolt on power and I was thinking about a superchargers. Which is a good brand of supercharger to purchase. Do superchargers run down your engine much quicker or at all verses running stock? Another question I have is, has anyone heard about or accuall put in 5.0 litre engine in an explorer? Thaks for your help.

BBK has a supercharger for the 4.0, it runs about $3,000. It's a bolt-on unit (replaces the stock intake manifold). It got a good review from Truckin' magazine in their newest issue. And yes, superchargers do wear your engine out faster but not enough to really worry about.

supercharged 4.0's

the vortech kit is a much better piece. it sells for under 3000 dollars. i have seen all most every supercharger kit out there and can say that the vortech is a much better deal. it will makes the most power of any kits out there and dont worry about whear and tear it is very minimal.

Paul Bredhoft has a Vortec on his truck and really dosen't like it that much. You might want to send him a email and ask what sort of problems he had. The BBK (roots) supercharger is much easier to put on and gives you power across the whole range. the Vortec kicks in at above 3Krpm

Gloria Zimmerman had a Vortec also she took it off, due to problems and poor (non-existant) customer service from Vortec.

Paul Bredehoft is getting like 8-9mpg with his.

So you know, the vortech, and units like it are for people wanting high end power, 3500+ RPM, the bbk is for the lower end power. Since you want it for towing, the bbk is really your only logical choice.

What have you done in the other areas like exhaust, Airbox/MAF, headers, chip? If you havent done those things, look into it, you may find that you dont want the supercharger anymore.

vortech.

i have used both types of blower before and i can say from past usage that i would rather make 80 more hp above 3000 rpm then a total of only 20 across the board. as far a milage is concerned my explorer that make 500 hp with a Vortech, gets more than 15 mile per gallon if you dont know what you are doing and dont know how to tune it properly then dont talk about bad results. i have used every blower and i know that the bbk kit is not as good as the vortech.i would rather buy a paxton then a BBK. if you want post some dyno number from a before and after and i will post some from my ranger.
