There is a top speed cut-off point in the Explorers somewhere between 103 and 109MPH depending on the engine size. How can it be found and is it possible to change it? I have a 2000 XLT with a 4.0 SOHC engine. Thanks!

The speed limiter is “burned” into the stock ECU. To bypass it, you would need to install an aftermarket chip. I don’t believe there is a way to fool the stock ECU without screwing up other things such as timing and you air/fuel ratio.

On a personal note, why would you want to go over 105 MPH in an Explorer? They are not the most stable vehicles at high speeds.

I believe the 97 or 98 limiteds with the v-6 are limited at 118...That's where my best friends topped out at.

Faster than 105? For what? I hope you're going to try that one on a track. At that speed the explorer could lose control pretty easy.

Explorers also don't stop too well. I'd rather be able to stop fast than speed up fast.

leave it alone

Trust me. I have a Daytona that the speedometer maxes out at 125. Got it there quite a few times when I was 16 and 17. Even that little sports car is feels like it wants to go all over the place at that kind of speed. Imagine how an Explorer that is a couple of FEET taller and a whole TON heavier feels.
I have actually had my Explorer hit its limiter. Only because I 'had' to though. I was late for work and got clocked by radar going 85mph. As the cop was turning around I had to make a choice between 1. pull over and get a wreckless driving ticket or 2. GO FASTER AND TRY TO GET AWAY! I decided my insurance would cost too much if I chose #1 so I gambled on choice #2. It felt like the whole truck wanted to just pick up and go flying off of the road while going that fast. It's not something I want to do again. Did you know that anti-lock brakes aren't so anti-lock when trying to slow from 100mph to about 10mph to pull into a driveaway? :-) Also something I don't want to relive.
BTW I DID get away, but that's a whole other story in itself. :-)

I have a '99 Sport with the SOHC and the cutoff was at 103mph. I've installed the Superchip to over ride the top speed limiter.

What are the newer Explorer's registered for (how high does the speedometer go?) My '91 only goes to 85 plus a few more marks (90), but I've had mine just past pointing straight down, coming back up the other side. Where does the needle usually stop?

If I wanted to find the speed that the Explorer cut out at I would simply hold my foot down on the floor until it cut out.

Of course I in no way endorse driving in excess of the posted speed limit.

In my '92 the speedo goes up to 180 km/h or 112 mph but the truck went faster than that before it was lifted probably pretty close to that now but I don't bother much anymore. In my '98 the speedo went to 200 km/h or 125 mph but it cut out at 170 km/h or 106 mph.
