I'm having this issue where I'll start the truck, the idle will be high, and it will shift at unusually high RPM's (3-4k) under normal throttle/load. The torque converter also won't lock. If I shut the truck off, restart it, there is a 50% chance the problem goes away until the next time I start the truck. So I'm guessing it's something electric or a solenoid or something. Sometimes it will happen while driving - everything is fine, then I'll look down and see I'm turning 3500 rpm's doing 70mph, because it won't shift to overdrive until 3800 or so.

I don't know anything about auto tranny's, especially Fords, so what are some common things to look into that would cause this?

Other issues the truck is currently having:

-Gaping hole in EGR tube (will replace soon)
-Intermittent shudder at 40-45mph under moderate load

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I would first try a transmission fluid and filter change. I had the same shudder problem into overdrive and it was fixed with a fluid change.

I'll give it a shot, but I don't see the fluid causing an issue that can be fixed by restarting the truck.

That egr tube hole probably has a lot to do with this.
I'd imagine you have a check engine light?

When the hole was much smaller, I had a p0402 (I think) code. I slapped some of that exhaust-leak-putty-crap on the hole, and the light went out. The putty eventually broke off the pipe, and the leak got much bigger, but still no light. It's LOUD, don't know why I'm not getting a light. Again, with this constant leak, I don't see it being related to a problem that can be caused by restarting the truck.

I am going to replace the tube and flush the fluid (along with some other maintenance), I'm just trying to think ahead of what some other possible causes could be. Thanks for the help guys.
