I just bought a used 2002 Explorer EB 4.0 and noticed a shudder when tranny shifts into second and also when it goes into 3rd from reading these forums i understand it's the torque converter? If so then that means only that should be replaced and not a complete tranny rebuild?

I had the fluid replaced today and it still has the shudder. I have a 5k 5 month warranty on it it has 117k and other than the shudder it seems to run and shift really well.

Thanks

Get it fixed, problems usually only get worse.

Thanks for your reply. So you also think it's the torque converter?

There is no way I can be sure it is the torque converter, without driving it and actually feeling it. But since you have a warranty, I would get it checked out, maybe at a trans shop for an opinion.

Yeah i'm afraid car lot would blow it off and claim some kinda lame excuse as to why it shudders and claim transmission is fine. So i took it to Mark Martin ford for a test drive/diagnostic after standing there for 3 1/2 hours they said nothing shows up on the computer and has no idea reason it shudders.

He did mention possibility of the rear end is the cause, but it feels like it shudders on front end or right under you and not the back end.
