Solved Torsion Bar 101, Everything you Need to look for!

Prefix for threads that contain problems that have been resolved, and there is an answer within the thread.
so when installing the torsion bar bolts a longer set to get the 2" of lift is it like a hit and miss?

If you have 4wd and lift it more than two inches using a torsion twist it will put improper stress on the CV joints and make them wear prematurely.
 






I have a 96 4x4 EB and it has 31" on there. How do I know if the previous owner already did the TT on it? I am going to put the shackles on there but not sure if they already did the lift on the front.

The rear seems low so most def shackles are going on.
 






sorry i worded that wrong i know that you cant go past the two inches or you can cause damage to the cv but i am planning on doing this so when i am installing the longer bolts do i just twist and measure. I understand that you need to lift the truck up in the front at least or the torsion bolts could snap so do i just twist and set down and measure untill i get the desired height of 2"?
 






soooo, what is the measured clerance from what point to what point when you are done with a 2" lift with shackles and TT?

Twist, measure and repeat. That's the best way, because everyones truck is going to be different. I was told it would take about 6 turns of the bolt to get the 2''. I was at well over 6 turns when my bolts bottomed out before getting 2'' of lift. I needed to order new bolts and give a bunch more turns before I got there.
 












I had mine adjusted about a year ago, it was off by 1 1/2 inches, but just on the right side. Why is that, and what makes the bar loosen?
 






cant you get like 3" torsion keys that lifts the front like 3" and if u can, can u twist the bolt that gives bout a in and a half and get the keys so that your front will end up being lifted about 4 1/2 inches?
 






i ordered some torsion keys from ebay and they didn't fit in the cradles and after i grinded them to fit they made my bars bend in the middle. could i replace my bars with
4wd bars and make my keys work?

How am I supposed to know when it's level with the rear? The 2nd gen Explorer body is kinda weird, the top of the wheel well things is lower than the front.. which no matter what you do makes it look sagging.. [unless your rear was higher than the front]

What's the best way to measure to see if it's all leveled out?

I figure for the TT, measure from the top of the wheel well to the ground.. but the back will be all weird... so idk
 






Just adjust them so you like the look. They may settle a bit.

im looking to drop mine as well. you got a 3" drop just from cranking the bars? no aftermarket keys or anything? please let me know cause that would be perfect for what im looking for
 












Torsion

I have a 2000 Explorer XLS. As of now the back sits lower than the front(about 1.5 to 2 in). I am planning on getting a 4 in rear lift from Superlift, Part#SUP1147. After that it will be tilting front down(oppsite than before). If I do a torsion twist afterwards what are the chances it is level? If i get this lift is it necessary for me to get the aftermarket driveshaft from Superlift that they recomend because the stock one will wear out? or are they just trying to stiff me?
 






Do you guys think my mechanic could do it when I get my xlt inspected or will he say something about bracking some type of law or messing up my alignment. Also, what type of add-a-leaf should I get or would universal lift blocks work (saw them in the new Jegs catalog). This has probbaly been answered but I don't have time to search for it.
 






It depends on your mechanic. Lift blocks will lower your Explorer due to the spring under axle.

That is the same thing I just did to my 2000 XLS, with the 4 in rear lift, and the tortion twist, the rear on mine sets about one inch higher, it really isnt that noticeable, I would recommend replacing the shocks tho, I used the Superlift Monotube shocks, and they ride really good. as for the drive shaft, im still using the stock one, ill replace it before i lift mine more
