Solved Torsion Bar 101, Everything you Need to look for!

Prefix for threads that contain problems that have been resolved, and there is an answer within the thread.
Jon

For the UK they decided to fit self-leveling rear suspension. So we have air shocks on the rear only and Export spec front shocks- whatever they are !. So on our x's only the rear goes up and down but only to compensate for the load and it is not adjustable. IE there is no movement when you go to 4x4 Low all it does is stop the rear sag when you load her up. Hope this helps.

That's strange 'cause I'm sure that my X rises and falls on engaging/disengaging 4x4 high and low More investigations to follow (either that or I've got to stop drinking anti freeze)

the bit about CV joints, that only effects 4wd right?

If so, on a 2whd does droppin it 2" have any adverse affects (I know it needs the alignment with cam kit)

Isolator question....

would anyone know if the torsion bar adjuster isolator's, part # 5B333 and 5B334, that are used on the 98+ years, can be easily fitted to a '97? Thanks.

CV joints are only on the 4x4's

Adjusters?

I'm getting ready to do this as soon as I get my add a leaf from summit, what are the adjusters and do they have to be replaced after the twist?

around the front door area under the truck you can see where you torsion bars end to the adjuster. there is a adjuster bolt on each side.. turn clock wise to lift.. alls you are doing it tighting the bolts.. dont have to replace them!

Thanks man, I new where to tighten, I guess I just didn't know that the bolts had there own name!
I'm glad I don't have to get any more parts, I'm already waiting on leafs, a 3 ton floor jack and stands!!

Thanks again!!

I have a 97 Mountaineer that is leaning to the drivers side rear. The dealer told me they need to twist the torsion bars. Will this work on this truck. Its a 5.0 AWD. Also can I lift it 1.5" without problems.

Thanks
Rich

Well here is what the Dealership is going to do.....

They are going to Adjust the Torsion Bar on only one side to get the Explorer Level. Then if you want to lift the front end, you have to find the shorter of the 2 bolts, and crank that one up, counting the number of turns you apply to it. and then crak the other bolt the same amount of turns as you did on the first bolt. You May not get a full 1.5" of lift out of them....

Thanks, I am going to try and level it myself, and save the 100 bucks they said it would cost .

Thanks again for the help
Rich

after you level it, Drive it around the block to get the suspension to settle in.... and then level it out again..

Will do

Thanks

Help Me!

I am looking to lift my 99' SOHC XLT 4.0L more than it already is. I have that new 4" Trailmaster lift on it and am running 31's. I want to lift it more and put bigger tires on it. I have read about torsion bars, modified Ranger body lifts, shackles, add a leafs, etc. What advice can you give me about the best way to lift it? I want 35's but I think that I am being optimistic. Help me! :redexp:

to maybe fit 35's you will have to add a 3" body lift and do a ~1.5" torsion twist and shackles (or add a leaf). you can still do the torsion twist on your 4" trailmaster lift just the same way. a good option would be to keep the 4" suspension lift and 1.5" torsion twist in the front, and do a spring over axle with your original leaf springs in the back for about 5.5".

this is as high as you can lift a '99 explorer without doing a solid axle swap. you will be getting 5.5" of suspension lift and 3" of body clearance. 33's will fit nicely but 35's you will have to do a lot of trimming.

thanks

thanks for your reply! i am sure i will be back with more questions!

thanks again!

question

when you say do a spring over axle with your original leaf springs are you reffering to leaf springs that are in the lift kit or the original ones from the factory.

you should start a new thread for these questions. im assuming you lifted the rear by using trailmaster's 4" leaf springs. if you do a SOA using the factory (no lift) leaf springs, it should give you about 5.5" of lift. if you did it with the trailmaster's leaf springs then you would be getting 9.5" of lift, which you wont be able to match up in the front. if you want to do this SOA, you would have to push the front to its max height using the 4" suspension lift combined with 1.5-2" torsion twist (my max, i mean 1.5-2" any higher on the torsion bars and you endanger your CV joints.

reply

thanks i will start a new thread under: :) suspension
