tow WAY less with a manual trans?

It doesn't matter what truck you use. I see guys load up a 3/4 ton truck full of people, hook a much-too-big travel camper (more like a glorified trailer house), and then hook a big boat up to the back of that. Even the guys with the big dually 1 tons, do they all have a CDL license, and don't drink alcohol on the weekends? I see rigs pushing the 26k limit all the time, and never get bothered. Towing a car is hardly rolling the dice.

Actually it does matter what truck you use. Right tool for the right job.

So what are you saying about these guys that are towing "glorified trailer houses" and for extra shock factor you add a boat on top of that and no CDL after drinking all weekend (a few details you failed to mention in your previous post but who cares about details, really)? It's not legal or safe but they do it and get away with it so it's fine? Is that your argument? So if you were dropped on your head as a baby but then turned out fine, would you say it's ok to drop babies on their heads?

Towing a car IS rolling the dice if you are towing over manufacturer specs, which it sounds like you are, because based on your earlier post where you cite your own personal experience, you told the OP that he would be just fine towing a ton overloaded over 250 miles.

Did I really need to add the detail that people tow more than 26k without a CDL? I guarantee you pass at least one person doing that every day. Back to topic, the question is why are the manual transmission trucks rated for close to half of what the auto transmission is, all else equal. The M5OD-R1 and M5OD-R1HD are both more than up to the task of hauling 3 tons, nobody would argue that. I haven't heard a good reason yet. I would not like to argue any more, I am just as curious as the OP. So far it seems that the only possible reason is increased clutch wear.

Well, considering you yourself felt like you had to add the detail about the CDL then , yes??? And you do know that the "C" on CDL stands for "commercial", right? So if you are tugging an RV for personal use, you may not actually need a class "A" or "B" license? Details though...

I don't drive everyday so...
(also see above)

Asked and answered. Not our problem you don't like the answers. Google it instead of trying to get others to do your research.

If I were you, I wouldn't want to argue anymore either. Typing with your foot in your mouth has to be getting hard, no?

I was genuinely interested in finding the official answer. I don't see anything more than educated guesses. So I don't think just the addition of a dry clutch deserves to nerf the tow capacity 68%; I don't think I should be treated like an idiot. I'll let you know when I burn a clutch out. I haven't yet in my relatively short life.

Or you could just treat the manufacturer specs as more than just mere suggestions and stay within them instead of hunting for answers that you only want to hear to validate towing overloaded and discarding those answers that you don't want to hear. :dunno:

Seriously though, good luck

what have you two done to my thread?

No kidding! Are there moderators here anymore?

Moderate what exactly? There has been no name calling, no personal attacks, no profanity. Did feelings get hurt? Maybe, but when you're discussing vastly opposing views, that's not uncommon...and while the discussion may have gone off on a tangent from the original question, at least responses have been towing related. In fact, the only responses that haven't been even remotely related to the topic is yours and the one I'm typing right now.

To the OP - apologies for going off on a tangent but with many towing capacity related questions, it's almost unavoidable sometimes to skew the discussion around the (im)prudence of towing over manufacturer specs and the "lively" discussion that follows.

petty bickering

No kidding! Are there moderators here anymore?

I've been watching this thread deteriorate from a legitimate question to petty bickering. I've let it continue hoping that the bickerers would eventually quit but some people always want to have the last word. To those people on this thread if you don't have something new (and pertinent to contribute) I will delete your posts.

10-4. Moderating is harder than most think so appreciate the latitude.
