So I've been diligently searching to make sure that once I get my rebate check I get what I really need. I've been looking into lockers and limited slip for my 99 Explorer Sport 4x4. I'd rather do a set of Aussie Lockers due to the simplicity and low cost, but I do plan to do some light to possibly heavy towing in the future. We are planning a trip to southern IA for Memorial Day weekend to go fishing and we'll have at least 3 - 4 guys in my Explorer w/ gear and a flat bottom 3 man boat. I know it's a very light boat and shouldn't pose much trouble towing it down there even w/ open 3.27s. There is at least 3 fresh quarts of Mobil 1 transmission fluid and a new filter in there, plus the new solenoids and my O/D will now turn off. So for that I'm in decent shape, I know by then I won't have the money or time for the transmission cooler nor the lockers, but in the future I will be wanting that added traction. I've read that towing with lockers is a bad idea as it can cause some major damage to the axle shafts. But my question is I know that the 8.8 in the rear of the Explorers are pretty tough and limited slip is expensive compared to those lockers. Would I be better off with limited slip. My off-road will be somewhat minimal. I would like to do some mudding and maybe go to a few off-road parks in the future and I do not want to get stuck or slide off my Dad's driveway again this winter either. Any suggestions as to which way I should go. I've heard a lot of good things about the TruTrac from Detroit and I did see the Ford Racing LS for a good bit less than that. But I'd like to know your thoughts on this. Thanks for any advice.

You'll be fine with the Aussie Locker. If you're worried about the axle shafts, they're all over the junk yards so just carry one as a spare.

I doubt very much you'll break axle shafts- I have towed a big camper and other trailers with my 5.0, 4.10's and 33's no problems.

I do, however strongly recommend you add an additional cooler make the time to do it- your transmission will be much happier.

That is definitely in my plans for this vehicle. Thanks for the advice.
