Howdy Explorer Gurus,
This is my second post on this site although I have spent many hours perusing your sage wisdom. I am the original owner of a 96 Explorer 4x4 XLT with the 4.0L V-6, auto transmission with overdrive, 100K miles, 31" BFG's and the factory LSD in the rear.
I have been considering changing the gears and adding a locker.
Stock is 3.73 and with the kind of driving I do, hills and towing it is severely lacking in the power department.
I was thinking 4.33 but have been unable to find them for my axles I can only find 4.10 or 4.56, I currently have 31's but would like the option to go to 33's.
First Question, which gear ratio would you recommend (personal experiences appreciated)?
I have been disappointed with the stock LSD and was considering a Detroit Locker but everybody says they are noisy and annoying on the road
Second Question, are we talking annoying like mud tires hum or like the wife will be yelling at me for doing this to her car annoying?
Third Question, is there a better/cheaper but just as effective option that will provide off road performance since I already have the LSD:salute: ?

Gracias,
Colt

You will probably get a few different opinions, but here's mine.

For 33s, I'd go with 4.56 gears. 4.10s will work, but you'll be much happier with the 4.56s.

As for lockers, the stock L/S is trash. I've had the Detroit Full Lock locker in 3 different trucks and I'm not sure what noise people are telling you they make. It will occasionally (very seldom) make a loud click/popping noise that will make you think you broke something (normal) but it won't make a humming or annoying noise.
You could also go with something like a lockrite or the Aussie locker (lunchbox style) which are cheaper.

Welcome to the site.

Colin,
Thanks for the info.
In theory I like the simplicity of the Detroit Locker

yeah we run detroits in the nextel cup cars and you cant hear any clicks unless you are pushing the car and turn the wheels really sharp, But i have 33's now and i think i am going with 4.56 or 4.88 woth lock rights front and rear.

33s with 4.56 or 31s with 4.10. You could always try a gear type limited slip (torsen or true-track). I am assuming that you have installed a performance air filter and cat back exhaust.
