Ok my Explorer gave me some troubles a month ago when i was towing my 4wd four wheeler. After bout 30 mins it would start smoking than stop and than start smoking again.... i have the tow package with the tranny cooler and all of my gauges were fine nothing too hot. The smoke kinda left a greasy residue on my window... has anyone else had this problem or can any one help me than

PEACE

Sounds like your tranny is gettting way to hot and blowing off fluid. I would get it checked out and maybe put a larger tranny cooler on before ya tow anything. Tranny failure will be big $$.

Not leaking any oil on to your exhaust manifold are you? Cause i am and it sends smoke up around the hood like no tomorrow  :( I probably should get that fixed ...

Hmmm...........what engine do you have, what transmission, how many miles, etc...we need details......

I use my BII to tow a 19' Bayliner in the rockies.
Here's what I have done in order to be able to do such a thing with a BII:

OHV 4.0L V-6
Custom built A4LD transmission
Hayden Class a motorhome transmission cooler
rubber cooler lines
180 degree thermostat
Super cooling Ford fan (aa blade) and clutch
Cuper cooling aluminum radiator
rear disk brakes
4.10 ring and pinion
custom driveshafts with HD U joints
James Duff receiver bumper
Rancho 9000 shocks

I change my tranny fluid and filter twice a year.
I also have mechanical gages on the oil pressure and water tempature
tomorrow I am adding a transmission temperature gage, a must for anybody who tows with an automatic..

I am also installing a 8" auxillary electric cooling fan on my transmission cooler with a thermostat and a manual toggle switch, to insure that I keep the ATF temp between 140-170 degrees.........

i have pretty much stock 4.0 .............. stock trans it has the stock trans cooler...... and it had its last complete flush and every thing less than 1000 ago

oh and it has 87,x.. miles total

PEACE

Might be a good idea to invest in a Tranny Temp gauge to see whats going on.

BTW- Welcome back!!!
