I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x4. If I drive it in drive for a little bit and then shift it in to reverse it has a jerk feel in it. It does not do this if it go in reverse first. Thanks for any help.

Might want to elaborate some.

Is the jerk more like a bump or a bang? If so check:

- slip yoke at the rear driveshaft (might need grease)
- rear axle's pinion flange for play (both rotational and lateral)

Additional

It is more like a bang with the jerking feeling.

I am going to try to explain this better. If you put it reverse without drive forward, it goes in reverse fine and smooth. But if you drive around in forward for any short time then try to switch it in to reverse, it jerks in to reverse. You do have a "pop" nosie with it while engaging in reverse.

I would look at the u-joints first... Not an uncommon issue...
