hello everyone first off thanks for taking the time to read this. I have put three trannys in my X in less than a year and half. everytime one fails it fails the same reason.. blows fluid out the front where the tranny bolts on to the engine. people have said that it was a pump seal or something but not sure. i live in Maine and i dont havea garage to work on major repairs like droping the tranny and transfer case. so i had to pay people to do it. i used two diffrent places incase it was mechanical error. but i dont think it is. if anyone has a idea of what i might do. cause if not then i think my days of owning a X are over.. 3 trannys and a few 1,000 bucks later is not worth it.. thanks everyone again.

Down n out Dan

This is the front pump seal on the A4LD.

You can do a search for this "front pump seal failure" and read for days.

There are many ways it can be fixed and it is also the most common problem after the A4LD is rebuilt.

Staking the seal in place is a must, the problem is usually alignment of the seal to housing I believe. I am no expert but I want to point you in the right direction.

The shop doing the labor should cover this under warranty IMO

The A4LD pump seal has a high failure rate on replacement. Why? Because the bushing on these is factory turned, often becomes enlarged, and eve n if people replace them (bushings) rarely are they concentric to the bellhousing. Any replacement that fails to address this carries with it a high probability of failure.

Since this is an unusual situation, many shops do not know this and blindly replace a bushing and soon have a repeat failure. The remedy is to replace the bushing with one that can be "turned" in place and trued up. The shops that do this will also often "tighten up" the clearances as well.

There is a shop here in Sacramento CA that does this work, (about $100) and one in the Carolinas as well (about $50). Do a search for A4LD Front Seal and you will find more information. I hope this helps you.
