I was hoping someone could tell me whether or not I can use a tranny from a 91 Sport 2WD in my 93 XLT 4WD. I am not sure whether or not it will bolt up to transfer case, but I figured someone here could probably shed some light on this for me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You'd need to put a 4wd tailshaft/housing? on the 2wd transmission. Otherwise should work.

Alec,
Thanks for the reply, but here's another question: would I be able to use the one currently on the 93 tranny, or is this an after market part I would have to buy for a conversion. Sorry for my ignorance, and thanks for the help.

You should be able to switch it

from the older transmission. While it is off, you ought to remove the speed governor and buff up the steel valve with some very fine wet/dry paper and oil. The only thing you have to be cautious of is the parking pawl. Rotate shist lever so the plunger is all the way out (park) and insert it in the opening. Then press the housing in as you rotate the brake plunger back in, it is spring loaded. Dont let the spring on the pawl fall out. It will all become obvious when you take it apart.

Thanks for the help guys. Sounds a little tricky with the spring, but I think I can handle it.:D

Doesn't the output shaft need to come out in order to changine the housing?

No

The only thing which is conected is the parking pawl in the extension. A non 4.0L A4LD has a different shaft with an oil hole and some internal differences.
