The tranny in my 2001 Explorer finally gave up and am looking at replacing it with a used one. its a 4 door, 4x4 with a 4.0 SOHC

My question is what trannys can I swap in with out becoming a major project?

My door code is D so according to the chart in another thread it is a 5R55E.

I do notice that the Sport Trac and some Rangers have a 5R55E (along with some Mazda Trucks) and was wondering what the differences are? Would I need to have my Driveshaft Lengthened/shortened? Wiring the same? Direct bolt up? Torque converter? Anything else?

All the local yards around don't seem to have one and if they did I am looking at 375 - 800 for one. They said only 99 - 01 would work.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, I need to get my baby back up and running soon.

Eric

PS: I know it prolly don't matter but the tranny quit moving forward and reverse, I was about a half mile from home when it started slipping real bad and then wouldnt move from a stop. Fluid looks ok but smells burnt, and is full. No fault codes or service lights. If you rev it up in drive or reverse it will lurch but that is all.

I just looked up your tranny in the Hollander Interchange and it shows a different interchange number up to 7/23/00 and after 7/24/00.

the same tranny is shown 1999 up to 7/23/00. a different one is shown after 7/24/00.

sometimes a small upgrade will cause the interchange manuals to list a different number. the internal parts are the same, but sometimes Ford will change a sensor, etc. in an upgrade. I've never worked on one like yours, so I can't give a definitive answer.

if the wrecking yard says it will work and they will guarantee the tranny, You decide if it's worth the effort.....

last year (related slightly) someone needed a tranny for a '99 Taurus. the locals sold her a '97 tranny. it bolted up fine but the wire plug-ins were different. the "mechanics" tried to change out the sensors (output speed) but they wouldn't fit from her original tranny. caused major problems.

check your tranny, side-by-side, and make sure the plug-ins are the same and if not, change them out from your tranny to the replacement one.

hope I didn't confuse you too much........jjf
