I have a 97 explorer with around 120,000 miles on it, never had any major problems with it except I had to replace the driveshaft once. For about a week I notice when switching from reverse to drive that it would take a couple of seconds to switch gears, then one day while out it would not switch into drive. Tried getting it home, and while in drive I would have to rev it up at like 6000-7000 rpm for it to move in drive. Pulled over and filled it with about a gallon of tranny fluid, still had to rev high to get home, and fluid was gushing out the entire way. I have been shopping around for the best way to replace this tranny, and bascially moving towards a ford motorcraft reman tranny because of warranty, and having my dealership install it so i wont have to pay the core charge. The thing that bothers me the most is the reverse still works perfectly, really not sure what to do need some advise ASAP.

if it ran long enough with that little fluid, it's toast. I don't believe reverse requires the same line pressure as forward gears, which may/could be why it always works.

it either needs rebuilt or replaced. Do whichever is cheaper for you.
