so swapped a A4ld out of a 94 eddie bauer and put in a M5, bypassed the nuetral safety, and did nothing else truck's wiring/computer, it goes great runs fine etc.... but when its cold it deosn't wanna drive, won't accelerate etc.. total dog, once it warms up its grrrreat, somethin unrelated or did we miss somethin

yeah you need the 5 speed computer :)

Actually I am not 100% sure why its running like a dog when in open loop, something is fishy are you sure you got everything hooked back up 100%?

This problem is more common on the A4LD. The manual uses direct drive gears unlike an automatic which has solenoids, and hydaulic clutches. When you put a manual into gear, it is physically engaged unlike an auto.

so then how does that explain why when cold it sucks and warm its great?

Are you getting a check engine light? W/out the a4ld the computer should be throwing a code about the solenoids (lockup and 4th gear).. If you connect the solenoids to the harness and zip tie them up you can get rid of that light. You can also just hook up 33 ohm resisters instead of the solenoids and the computer will be just as happy.

light only on rarely he says, don't care if the light is on for those reasons, hes just tired of letting it warm up for 15 minutes in the morning before he can drive it

bottom line is there are only 3 wires different for the auto vs 5 speed, the 1-2 shift, 3-4 shift and the converter lock up.
even without these wires hooked up a 94 shuold run the same, so I am not sure what happened but I dont think it was the transmission swap personally.
I know when my truck went from 5 speed to auto I blew an auto computer, I drove it for like 2 weeks with a 5 speed computer hooked up, the engine ran just fine, so I am not sure your power problem is replated to the trans swap UNLESS you pinched wires, didnt plug the vacuum line, or something similar.

I would also not assume the CEL is on just because there is not trans solenoids, I would attempt to pull the codes and see if it tells you why its not making power in closed loop

The A4LD has 2 solenoids, one speed sensor, and a neutral safety switch. Some models have 4 pins, and others have 5pins on the neutral safety switch. The VSS has 2 pins. The computer receives a signal from this part. The A4LD only has computer control for 4th (overdrive), and for the TCC. 1-2, and 2-3 are not computer controlled.

sorry you are correct, two solenoids, the lock up and OD
I remember running 3 wires from the PCM to the trans though....hmmmm maybe it was just two
I didnt have the wires when I went from 5 speed to auto behind my 93 4.0L so I had to add them

did he plug the vacuum line for the modulator?

did he plug the vacuum line for the modulator?

yeah plugged both, mod line and cruise line, when we switched pedal assm's which sucked, we just did away with cruise

There are 3 wires. One is a common positive wire, and the other 2 are computer controlled ground wires for the solenoids.

Thats where you can put the resisters so the computer thinks the solenoids are still there.. Between the common wire and the two grounds (mine looks like a flux capacitor).

he blew the auto at an orv park, wasn't able to start the engine since the tranny went and we replaced it (trans pump seized engine would not turn over) i removed is MAF and it had dry mud caked over it, cleaned it up, see in the morning if its any better
