Son was driving 1991 4wd 5 speed Explorer just over 60mgh and a bang was heard and grinding. He pressed in the clutch and it was dead, right to the floor without resistance. He did manage to get it in Neutral and to the emergency lane. He mentioned smoke or burning smell. We had it towed on a flatbed due to it being maxed out with a lift kit. The next day the clutch had a stiff feel to it again but it still acted like it was between gears. Grinding right off the bat like the mesh was out of sync. The vehicle has been restored and with rebuilt motor and tranny. Would the clutch plate going out cause this situation? We need to do this ourselves due to limited funds, with the gang of friends helping. Any ideas on what might be the problem would help greatly...

Probably blew the flywheel/flexplate.

Right On about the turn signals...keep the flow

Pulling a rubber gromet from the bellhousing allowed a visual of the flywheel/flexplate...
it looks to be busted up pretty bad and its all we need to do-it ourselves vice taking it to a shop for a dianostic/quote/cause....I believe my son owes you a huge thanks...You took the time to help and may it return to you when you are in need... I have always believed in "Pass It On"....turn signal user from way back. Peace

Glad to be of help. If you are up to the task, it is something that can be fixed on your own I believe. If you run searches on this site, you will probably come across threads related to your issue and how to fix. You may also want to take a look at the Singleton Maintenance thread in the Useful Threads forum. Lots of great maintenance/how to info there, especially for the first gen Ex's.
