hey I was just wondering if any 1st gen explorers came with a transmission cooler? I know it runs through the radiator but did some come with anything extra? Any info would be great.

i believe the tow package the factory offered came with a aux cooler used along with the one in the radiator.

Stock on Limited's and most Eddie Bauers. Then there's idiots like me that add another one:rolleyes:

I bought a '91 and two '92s in the last year and they all had the factory aux cooler. All were XLTs and I don't think any had the tow package. My brother bought a '92 Eddie Bauer new with the towing package and from what I remember it was it was a class III hitch, wiring, and 3.73 LS rear.

I had one in my 92 Sport

just add another one anyways

...on my 94 sport i only have the cooler in the rad...no aux cooler installed by the factory ...i have one a new(cooler) to put in but i'm waiting to get a transmission fluid filter from summit before i start plumbing it all in .

Ok turns out I do have a trans cooler but its all by its self in the front, then behind that I have my A/C radiator, and behind that I have the Radiator for the Engine coolent. Does anyone else have a setup like this? I always thought that the tranny fluid and the engine coolent were in the same radiator.:dunno:

Klutch, your truck should have a transmission fluid/fluid cooler BUILT into the radiator and the additional aux cooler mounted up front.

I have NEVER seen a Gen I factory truck with an auto transmission and no fluid/fluid cooler in the radiator.

Look on the drivers side of your radiator, there will be two metal lines going into it, one up high and one down low near the frame, the upper one is the fluid coming in from the transmission, the lower hose leaves the radiator and goes to the top of your aux trans cooler.

If you do not have the auto transmission rtadiator then the previous owner removed it, this is NOT a good thing... the aux cooler by itself is NOT enough to cool your A4LD.
The fluid/ fluid cooler is the most efficient type of cooler (uses coolant to cool atf inside the radiator) IMO it should ALWAYS be part of your auto trans cooling system

WOW I feel stupid! sorry about that. Thanks for letting me know. I think im going to get another cooler though and a temp gauge since the previous owner went through 2 transmissions

GOOD IDEA

the cooler the better with these transmissions, you CANNOT overcool them
