i believe this is a trans issue but i could be wrong.

when the trans is in overdrive it has the tendency to jerk and buck if i give it a good amount of throttle but not enough to make it kick down to 3rd. when it kicks down there is no problem. only when i give it the right amount of throttle and it happens way easier if its at lower speed versus like 75 mph.

i was wondering if this could be the torque converting locking and unlocking?

ideas?

Sounds like lockup converter shutter. Mine was doing the same thing. I changed the fluid and filter and added a bottle of lubeguard and after 100 miles or so mine quit doing it. Has been fine since. I'm not real big on additives but lubeguard I will recommend.

i looked that stuff up, there are different types i guess. so far i have seen mention of a black and red bottle. i was reading a ford trucks forum and a few people talked about using the red stuff and saying it fixed their "lockup shudder" so im assuming these guys were talkin about the same thing.

red bottle then?

while we're on the subject, i was thinking of going with amsoil atf, which yea....will cost me over $100 but every says its the bomb. i also looked at mobil 1 fully synthetic atf which seems to be more expensive than the amsoil so i probably wont go with that but are there any other good fully synthetic atf's that might have similar performance but not cost quite as much?

Yes, it is the red bottle of Lubeguard. As far as the synthetic atf I really can't say. I used Castrol brand Mercon V. Best I can remember it took about 12 quarts to do the filter change with draining the torque converter. By the way, to drain my converter it was through a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing that has a plastic plug in it. Take the plug out and turn the flexplate until you see the plug in the converter.

i was under the impression the trans did not have a torque converter drain plug? is the trans the same for the 5.0 as the 4.0's?

also, what is the flex plate? same as the flywheel for a manual trans? how do i turn it?

oh and how much lubeguard did you put in?

1 bottle of lubeguard. I don't know on the 4.0 tranny but my 5.0 tranny had a drain. Maybe someone else can help you out there. Yes, the flexplate is what is called a flywheel on a manual tranny. I used a screwdriver to turn mine through the hole in the bellhousing by using the flexplate teeth.

alright, thanks. i'll see if it has a drain plug tomorrow. it would be great if it did considering the only other way to swap all the fluid is to pay someone to do a flush for me. id rather put that money towards the best ATF i can find.

no drain plug. my trans is leaking a fair amount right now, it looks like its the gasket. :banghead:

whatever, thats got to be replaced when i replace the filter anyways.
