I have a 97 explorer 4.0 xlt auto. Just recently started having what I think is a T/C problem but not sure. The truck drives and and shifts Great in the city with no problem.

The problem. Recently I was on the highway @ about 60-80 mph( only time it does it) The road was a large up and downhill road. The truck would go uphill with no problem. BUT when going downhill the truck started making a loud screaming/ whinning noise from the Trans or T/C. It would only stop when given gas or put in neutral. If anyone knows which one it most likely is coming from or how to fix it would be great!

The truck has 152k on it and I have owned it since 120k so god knows when the last time if ever the T/C fluid was changed.

Any help will be appreciated!

Have you checked the fluid level in both?

Trans Yes Its Good. I plan on doing the T/c This weekend. A shop around here told me it could be from the tires. But their all the same and about 5 months old.

Tires or transfer case...my money is on the TC, worn shift fork bushings, chewed up range collar, etc.
