The gear indicator is probably just wrong, so when its showing Reverse, it's actually in Neutral, and when it's on the N, it's actually Drive that's engaged. You will probably need to take off the gauge cluster and see what's up.

Rubber hoses don't usually hang from transmissons, check where it's supposed to go and reattach it.

Trans

First off thanks for the reponse.

The gear indicator seems to show fine..

The truck has 1,2,3 d, over drive and N, R.

It seems strange that 123D and over drive plus N make the the truck drive forward like it;s in drive..

Maybe that hose is a concern..i thought it might be a vent to the tran.

check linkage maybe something is loose or missing and just needs to be reattached, worst case welded clutches

It might go to the modulator? Maybe this is causing the problem?

It's probably the vent hose like you thought, but it's worth inspecting the trans to check theres not a fitting thats missing the other end of the hose or something if it looks like it was attached.

Are you saying that it goes forward in all gears except park? (thats what I get from your 2nd post)..

If so, most likely the rooster comb came loose and now when you shift gears, its moving the parts on the outside of the transmission, but w/out the linkage to the rooster comb the stuff on the inside doesn't change (I've had that happen twice when I still used the a4ld).

If it doesn't have reverse AND it goes forward in neutral, then the shift linkage is still most likely the culprit.

As for the hose, there are only 2 rubber hoses on the a4ld.. The vent hose (small white hose, at the top that sometimes gets a bigger rubber hose put over it by the owner of a truck that might go over deeper water) AND the modulator hose. The modulator lets the transmision know how much vacuum you are pulling so it will know when to shift. If the modulator goes bad, trans fluid will go into the hose, making it soft which in turn can make it come off giving you a really bad vacuum leak and late shifts.

Hi ,

It goes forward in N, D over drive, Norm D, 3, 2, 1

Rev. goes in but doesn't move...

You can also shut the truck down in N and when you start it in N it rolls forward like a standard Trans..starting in a gear..

Where does a guy look for this rooster comb?

Its sounding more like the rooster comb/linkage is not quite right..

When you have it in park, is it acting like you have it in neutral, but have your foot on the brake? (RPMS are lower than they would be if you were in neutral, and the rpms won't climb past the converter stall speed).

The rooster comb in insite the pan..

Here's a thread that talks about the "z link" which connects the outside linkage to the rooster comb.

The pic in post #4 of that thread shows the rooster comb (the stair stepped piece).

This thread has even better pics of the rooster comb.. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106854&highlight=rooster

Park is good..runs norm.

Everything below (Gears) is a bit strange..

I will check the linkage..

A welded forward clutch could also give a similar symptom.

So I removed the pan and everything looks good...Any other ideas?

What is this welded forward clutch?

hard to fix?

Thanks everyone for the good info...

I think it is rebuild time my northern friend.
