My O/D light is flashing. The transmission is operating fine as far as I can tell.
My code reader registers code 647, "incorrrect gear ratio". After reading I have learned that my 95 XLT 4WD uses a vehicle speed sensor at the transfer case and an ABS speed sensor in the rear diff.

I assume if the rear sensor went, the ABS light would come on.

Now I looked at my transfer case and noticed it looks oily as if its leaking. Could this be causing the warning light? Is there a standard procedure to fix a leak? I mean could it be a gasket or loose nut? Or could it be anything? Should I fill it myself to see if it is indeed the problem before I bring it in?

I called the local autoparts store which carries Niehoff parts. When I select by my truck it returns 3 parts so I dont even know which one to buy.

www.niehoff.com , catalog select by application.

Any help would greatly be appreciated even if only to recommend a place near Burlington/Hamilton Ontario.
Thanks

184k miles....bought second hand when at 120k so probably never had any tranny work.

I will now search band adjusting....not sure if I can do it myself. Thanks

I have 2 threads on band adjustments. The transmission section has one with step by step pictures. The Technician forum section has one without pictures. Check my list of useful threads for the links.

Well I had a rash of things to take care of so I brought the truck into a tranny shop.

They pulled two codes. #533 and #647. I pulled the 647 before but the 533 is news to me and my code reader should have found that. My book states it is a commmunication link or EIC circuit fault. I havent checked to confirm that code with my reader yet. They also said the fluid was all burnt. I checked it on the dipstick only, and it looked fine to me, I will double check again.

They said I have two options. Either replace the fluid or get a rebuild. The cost of the flush would be $150 but with no guarentees that it well help let alone not make it worse. The rebuild would be $1800.

I asked him about adjusting the bands as mentioned. His response was there are no bands for the gear affected.

My plans are to try the band adjustment as instructed here. I just have to find a micro-torque wrench and a 5/16" 8 point socket.

I remember briefly disconnecting the battery and the O/D light started to flash as soon as I started the engine. Now if 647 pertains to 3rd gear wouldnt I at least have to drive the vehicle before it posted the error again?

Gonna clean the garage tonight and climb underneath. Anything I could visually look for?

One more thing, probably means nothing, but my driver side exhaust has separated after the catalytic converter. Its blowing hot air out there. Could that be mucking things up?

Sorry for the long post and thanks again for any help.

#533 (M) Data Communications Link to instrument cluster failure - see 529

Well my tach hasnt worked well in a long time and my speedo is questionable. I do have an extra one I havent put in yet but I assume this is irrelavent to the tranny issue?

Okay , I disconnected the battery and codes were cleared. Its been clear for several days now and running smoothly.

I went to adjust the bands but cant fit my torque wrench in there. Should I put off until the code comes back? I dont want to make it worse by not tightening the exact amount.

I will now investigate how to change the tranny fluid myself.
