Dear All,

I'm looking to change the fluid in my transfer case. I am thinking of using THIS fluid for the change as it is Mercon V compliant and very importantly fully synthetic.

My question is mostly procedural and as follows:

Accepting that the fluid in my transfer case has most probably never been changed, so it is likely to be black and full of crap - is it worth doing a fluid refill with 'cheaper' Mercon fluid and run it for say 1K miles (or 1 month whichever is sooner) and then refill, but this time with the Amsoil stuff?

My thoughts are that a quick fluid change (AKA: flush) might help remove more crud and crap from the case than a simple drain/refill and then by filling with the proper Amsoil stuff, leave it in there for a while yet (before changing it again in a few years time). The only downside I can see to this is that there doesn't appear to be a huge price differential between stuff that is semi-synth. (and showing as Mercon only) and Amsoil. So my other thought is to drain/refill with Amsoil, then do the same again in about a years time given there is no real price saving.

Maybe I am over thinking this :P

Can MerconV be substituted for Mercon?? The reason i ask this is that the transfer case only requires Mercon and not V. 1.4L capcity IIRC

Personally i would just use mercon but make sure when i drain it i also vacuum pump out the dregs at the bottom.

Apparently it is possible to go with Mercon V as Mercon as a fluid only no longer exists. And Ford USA have released TSBs indicating Mercon V should now replace Mercon in such applications.

So on that basis, I was opting for Mercon V fluid as my final use fluid. However, your idea of using a suction pump is definitely a good one and one I intend to use. I was pondering a flush of some sort; and seeing fluids listed as 'Ford Mercon' and Mercon V have negligible cost difference, it got me thinking about what I should do.

Well in that case you can get comma multi vehicle ATF that is MerconV rated for £26 for 5ltr
