Should be a 95 or 96 only but I did it with half of a 99 and half of my 95 because I was desperate and wanting to experiment since I got nothing to lose. It's been 3 weeks now and still working perfectly and quiet.
Anytime I want to figure out interchanges I use a site called Car-part.com.It is actually a collection of auto wreckers but their search uses the Hollander Interchange number which is what most wreckers use so you end up with a pretty good idea of the range of years and models which interchange.
He got a 96 so a 95 and 96 BW4405 is the only one that will fit without modification. If you move up to a 97 and up you have to change the front driveshaft also because of the new "cup" design. I was hunting for a good decent 95 and 96 4405 for months and none was available but 98+ up in my area was a dime a dozen and that's one of the reason I dived in and did the modification and it set me back less than a 100.00 including front driveshaft. But if you want to spent 500+ and up there are plenty of 95 and 96 rebuilt units on E*ay and if I remember Omega.com was 1000.00+ for a whole unit with upgrades. If you have the AWD then I think it may be slightly different configuration.
