I have a 97 4.0 explorer with a bad motor. I have found a 96 Explorer with a bad transfer case. Im wondering if they interchange or problems I might encounter. Also If I correct on this even with a bad transfer case the truck should still drive in 2wd correct?

On the 1st question, yes they will interchange. I am running a 96 t-case in my 97. you will have to use the 97 front driveshaft though, they are different. On the 2nd question it depends on what is broken.

Ok I know often times a transfer case is mistaken for a Tranny failure and vise versa. That being said will both the trans and transfer case swap? Because my trans was just rebuilt not more then 10k ago.

Not sure which way you are swapping things, I assume into the 96, the 96 has a 4R55E ( 4speed) trans , the 97 has a 5R55E (5speed) assuming they are both autos. The computer and wiring won't match. Before someone jumps in here and says it can be swapped, yes, as far as I know it can, but not with out swapping internal trans parts.

Good info. Initally im looking to swap a 97 transfer case to a 96. I do know my trans is a 5r55e. Im not sure how to diagnose a transfer case so thinking ahead a bit if my trans will work in the 96. But from what I read here the transfer case will swap no problem but the trans wont without major modifications. Do I understand all this correct? Thanks for the help fellas.

Ok i talked to the fella that has the 96 again. He says the transfer case makes a clunking noise when driving. SO if it drives it rules out the tranny. But he said its an AWD truck. I didnt know they made a full time all wheel drive explorer. But mine just has the switch on the dash for Auto Low High. So now are these AWD transfer cases rarer? and can they be rebuilt?

If it's a V8 yes they were AWD. No dash control. Not sure what year they started with the V8 but I think it was 95, memory getting bad. Salvage yards have them. Don't think they ever made a V6 AWD but I could be wrong.

The 96 V8 model has no Gem or wiring to operate the 4405 TC also not compatible with the computer.
So no, it won't work.
