transfer case issue please help

i have a 98 explorer xlt awd the buttons show auto 4 high and 4 low
when driving down the road it does fine if i jump on gas at take off to hard it pops if i go off road it pops hard if i turn switch to 4wd and i turn it pops if i turn switch to 4 low it does nothing the t case will not engage to 4 low just engases from auto to 4 high

what could this be and what do i do please help

mine does not do that jump a pop every once in a while but only when i excelerat or go off road hard. its almost as if the chain is skipping over a gear

I would:

a) Check your universal joints to see if maybe you are getting some binding.

b) Lube the slip yoke to make sure it isn't binding.

But, you are saying that you can't shift the TC into low range and you are getting some "pops" when accelerating and off road. There is a failure mode where the TC "thumps" when the internal gears go out of mesh. If that is the problem, you are looking at rebuilding or replacing your TC.
