I have a '97 explorer that when its in 4 wheel drive and I turn, It makes a grinding noise. The noise stops when I switch it back to auto mode. Just concerned the transfer case is on its way out at 116k. Is this a transfer case issue or something else? Thanks

Are you doing this on dry pavement?

Hi, the first time it made the noise it was a mix of snow and wet roads. the second time it made the noise, the roads were completly snow covered but the noise wasn't as bad. I quickly switched it back to auto. I had the truck for 4 years and this is without a doubt a new noise.

It may be that the chain has stretched and is grinding against something.

I better start pricing a used one out. Thanks for the help
