UK FORD garages want $140 to change Transfer case oil - what is typical price in the US for this job?

Decided to try and change the oil myself. Can any of you guys supply photograph of where the oil filler and drain plugs can be found?

email gjanstey@hotmail.com if you can help.

Serious helpers only please.

Thanks in advance

Kath.

$140? Ouch!

A local "quick lube" around here would charge $30, I'd say at the most. My 4x4 '93 isn't here right now, so i can't get pix. Sincere apologies.

It's easy to do

Make sure your X is on a level surface

First remove the 4 bolts which secure the balancer to the transfer case. This is the round thing which appears to do nothing but in actuality damps vibration.

Once this is removed you will see a plug with a 3/8 square indentation this is the drain plug.

Roughly in the center of the transfer case there is another plug with a 3/8 hole this is the fill plug. Remove this plug and put in a safe place.

Place a container under the transfer case and remove the drain plug wait for it to drain out and replace the drain plug.

Now refill the transfer case with Mercon III ATF until it runs out the fill plug
replace fill plug.

Reinstall the balancer

You are done!

Total cost about $10 US + disposal fees for the used ATF from the transfer case
