Hi:

I have extremely limited mechanical skills.

How does one check transfer case oil on a 6 cylinder DOHC 98 Explorer XLT with an automatic transmission?

Thanks

On the rear of the transfer case are two plugs that have a 3/8" square drive. Use a ratchet extension and unscrew the top one, the fluid should be level with the bottom of the hole. To drain the t-case, remove the bottom plug. Fill via the top hole.

The fluid in there should be clean, red, Mercon ATF.

Is it the same process for a V8 AWD ?

At this age you might as well replace it, mine was pretty dirty. It takes about 1 3/4 quarts to refill. If your fluid is low, it might because of the rear seal leaking. Had to replace it in my 97 two years ago. It can also indicate that the rear housing that mounts the bearing is wearing. This is a nasty problem!
