hey guys,

I'm trying to finish up some maintenence on the X and i've got a few questions about its transfer case, I dont 4wd often, but I still want to take a thing off my list if I can.

What type of transfer case are 2nd gen explorers equiped with?

and

What things (if any) should I do for as far as maintence is concerned to keep it healthy?

Thanks,
-zach

Its a Borg Warner 4405 (Control Trac).

I would recommend draining and refilling the transfer case fluid at the appropriate intervals. Be aware that it uses Mercon ATF, not gear oil. I use AmsOil Synthetic ATF in mine, but regular ATF is fine if it meets the Mercon spec.

thanks for the help.

i'm not sure the last time the transfer case was serviced, so next oil change i'm gonna give the transfer case a change as well.

is it just as simple as: removing the drain plug, drain, replace, then put 1-2 quarts ATF in the fill plug?

Yeah, the hardest part is pumping the fluid back in. You can't exactly funnel it in down there. :D

good to know, would a simple hand pump do the trick?

A hand pump should work.

If I remember correctly, I used a cap which fit the quart of ATF and has a long hose (about 18"). I put the hose into the fill hole, then manuvered the bottle so I could pour it in. Not exactly graceful, but it worked.

You can find one of those caps in an auto parts store or at WalMart.
